The dread before the first visit is real, on both sides.
She's bracing for a stranger to walk into her home and change everything she's used to. You're bracing for her to refuse, to be cold, to make it harder than it needs to be. Almost every family we work with describes some version of that same nervous morning.
Here's what we've learned after hundreds of "first visits": rushing it backfires. A caregiver who tries to do too much too fast, jumping straight to personal care, taking over the kitchen, pushing a routine, confirms every fear she had walking in. A caregiver who starts slow, lets her lead, does less than she expects at first, and simply shows up as the same familiar face again and again, that's how trust actually gets built. Not with one good visit. With enough consistent ones that "the helper" quietly becomes "our person."
The first visit is the hardest part. It gets so much easier from there.
💬 If your family has been through a rocky "first visit" that eventually turned into real trust, we'd love to hear how it happened.
