🚗 What does liability insurance cover?

When you’re looking at your auto insurance coverage, liability insurance is designed to help protect you when you’re legally responsible for injuries to someone else or damage to someone else’s property.

There are two main types:

Bodily Injury Liability (BI) may help cover:
• Medical expenses
• Lost wages
• Pain and suffering
• Defense and court costs

Property Damage Liability (PD) may help cover:
• Damage to another vehicle
• Damage to a fence, building, or other property
• Loss of use of damaged property
• Defense and court costs

One important distinction: liability coverage generally doesn’t pay to repair your own vehicle or cover your own injuries when you’re responsible for an accident. Other coverages, such as collision, comprehensive, and medical payments coverage, may apply.

If you’re not sure what your car insurance liability limits mean or whether your current coverage fits your situation, we’re always happy to explain it.

🚗 What does “full coverage” actually mean?

We hear the phrase “full coverage” all the time when talking about auto insurance. But here’s the thing: “full coverage” isn’t actually a specific coverage or guarantee that everything is covered.

Your car insurance policy can include several different types of coverage, including:

• Liability coverage
• Comprehensive coverage
• Collision coverage
• Medical Payments coverage
• Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage
• Other optional coverages

Each coverage has its own limits, deductibles, terms, conditions, and exclusions.

So when you tell us you want “full coverage,” we want to make sure we’re talking about what you actually want your auto insurance to do for you—not just using a phrase that can mean different things to different people.

After more than 20 years, we’re grateful you’ve trusted us to be your insurance go-to. Helping our customers understand their coverage is one of the parts of this job we value most.

🏠 Market value vs. replacement cost — what’s the difference?

These two numbers are not necessarily the same when it comes to homeowners insurance.

Market value is what a buyer might pay for your home and land.

Replacement cost is the estimated cost to rebuild the home, based on factors such as its size and construction, subject to policy limitations.

Replacement cost is not necessarily:
• Your home’s market value
• What you paid for the home
• The value of the land
• What you still owe on your mortgage

Understanding the difference can help you better understand your home insurance coverage.

🚗 Steer Clear®: A State Farm program for teen and young drivers

If you have a teen or young adult who is learning to drive, you may have heard about State Farm Steer Clear. It’s designed to help young drivers build safer driving habits while potentially earning a State Farm auto insurance discount.

Here are some of the questions we hear most often:

• Who is eligible for the Steer Clear discount?
• How does the Steer Clear program work?
• How much driving is required?
• Can a parent or family member mentor the young driver?
• What happens after the program is completed?
• Can you participate without a smartphone?
• What could cause the Steer Clear discount to be removed?

To qualify, drivers generally must be under age 25, have a valid driver’s license, have no at-fault accidents or moving violations during the previous three years, and successfully complete the program requirements. Eligibility requirements can vary by state.

The program includes training modules, videos and quizzes, plus 5 hours of driving over at least 10 trips. Once the requirements are completed, the driver receives a certificate that can be shared with their State Farm agent.

I especially like that Steer Clear isn’t just about the potential insurance savings. It gives young drivers an opportunity to think intentionally about things like defensive driving, bad weather, intersections, blind spots and anticipating what other drivers may do.

If you have a teen driver, new driver, or young driver on your auto insurance, it’s worth asking your State Farm agent whether Steer Clear may be an option.

🚗 Who should you add to your car insurance policy?

A question we hear often is: “who needs to be listed as a driver on an auto insurance policy?”

Generally, regular drivers should be added to the policy. A regular driver is someone who drives your vehicle more than once a month in a typical month.

That can include:
• Spouses and family members
• Significant others
• Roommates
• Teen and college-age drivers
• Friends or neighbors who regularly drive your vehicle
• Nannies or babysitters who regularly drive your insured vehicle

Even if someone has their own car insurance, it’s important to let your agent know if they’re regularly driving your vehicle.

Every situation is a little different, and your policy and state requirements determine the specifics. If you’re adding a new driver, have a teen starting to drive, or simply aren’t sure whether someone should be listed on your auto insurance, we’re happy to help you understand what applies to your situation.

🚗 Drive Safe & Save®: What you should know

If you’re considering State Farm Drive Safe & Save, here are some of the questions I hear most often about this auto insurance discount program:

• How much can I save with Drive Safe & Save?
• How does the Drive Safe & Save discount work?
• Does my premium adjustment stay the same?
• Do I have to enroll every vehicle?
• What driving information is used?
• How does annual mileage affect the premium adjustment?
• Who can see my Drive Safe & Save information?

Drive Safe & Save is optional and vehicle-specific. You may be eligible for an auto insurance discount of up to 30% based on how you drive, with an initial premium adjustment for enrolling and completing setup.

Your driving information and privacy are also important questions. State Farm says it does not sell your information, although information may be shared with third parties in limited situations. For complete details, State Farm refers customers to its Privacy Policy.

If you’re wondering whether Drive Safe & Save, telematics, or a safe driving program might be right for you, reach out to your State Farm agent. We’re happy to answer questions and help you understand how it works.
