📉 MARKET UPDATE – WEEK OF AUGUST 31, 2026

Markets remained muted last week as investors weighed Nvidia’s earnings and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s comments at Jackson Hole. Nvidia raised its guidance, supporting continued optimism around AI, while Warsh’s inflation concerns pushed rate-hike expectations higher. The 10-year Treasury yield also remained near its 52-week high.

📉 MARKET UPDATE – WEEK OF AUGUST 24, 2026

Markets pulled back last week after three straight weeks of gains as stalled ceasefire talks with Iran pushed oil prices and inflation concerns higher. Rising Treasury yields also weighed on sentiment, while mixed retail earnings showed continued strength among higher-income consumers but added pressure from higher gas prices.

Back-to-school season is bringing higher costs for many families.

A new analysis found that a typical basket of school items, including notebooks, lunch boxes, and index cards, is up nearly 8% compared with last year.

School lunches are also more expensive, with the cost of a typical packed lunch up 11%.

The analysis estimates families may spend roughly $4,000 per student on school supplies and lunches this year, including about $175 on school items and $3,800 on packed lunches.

Some items have seen especially sharp increases. Lunch boxes are up 27%, one-subject notebooks are up 23%, and index cards are up 22%.

Higher tariffs, imported school supplies, food prices, and energy costs are all contributing to the increase.

For families, back-to-school shopping is a reminder that seasonal expenses can add up quickly, especially when everyday costs are already stretching household budgets.

The House passed a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent across most of the United States.

The bill passed by a vote of 308-117 and would end the twice-a-year clock change if it becomes law.

Supporters say permanent daylight saving time would provide more evening daylight during the hours when many Americans are most active. They also point to potential benefits for families, outdoor activity, tourism, and local businesses.

Critics have raised concerns about darker winter mornings, especially for children waiting for school buses and parents commuting to work.

States could opt out if their legislatures act before the bill takes effect.

The bill still needs to pass the Senate before it can be signed into law, so the current clock-change system is not changing yet.

For households and businesses, the debate is a reminder that even something as routine as changing the clocks can affect schedules, safety, commuting, consumer behavior, and local economic activity.

The Senate would also have to pass the daylight saving time bill before it could be signed into law, but it’s unclear if it will do so.
