Two investors can own the same index and still owe very different tax bills. With direct indexing, you hold the individual stocks instead of a single fund share. Even in a year when the market is up, some of those stocks will be down, and those losses can be harvested to offset gains elsewhere in your portfolio. You also get more control over which gains you take and when, which helps when you're diversifying a concentrated position. It isn't the right fit for everyone, and the slide lays out the benefits, the watch-outs, and when direct indexing may make sense. Questions about your own situation? Reach out at oleawm.com.
