⚠️ Insurance Policy Alert — Please Read, El Dorado County Neighbors!!!

Some residents have discovered inaccuracies on their home insurance applications~~ specifically misrepresented distances to fire hydrants and staffed fire stations.
This isn't a small detail: insurers use this info to set your premium, and if it's wrong, they can use that same inaccuracy to deny your claim later~~ potentially after a wildfire, when you need coverage most.

What's happening:

Applications are being submitted with false information about fire protection access. If you didn't personally verify these details with your agent, you may not know what's actually on your policy.

What you can do:

Request a copy of your full application and policy ~~read what's actually listed for hydrant/fire station distance.

Verify those distances yourself with El Dorado County Fire or CAL FIRE
Confirm your agent's license status at insurance.ca.gov (License Status Check)

California law (Ins. Code §2071) requires fire policies to follow a standard form~~ you can look up exactly what your policy is legally required to include at leginfo.legislature.ca.gov

If you find inaccuracies, file a complaint with the CA Dept of Insurance: 1-800-927-4357 or insurance.ca.gov

Before You Switch Insurance Agents — Quick Way to Check Their Record

Hi neighbors,
With so many people shopping around for insurance lately, I wanted to share a free tool a lot of folks don't know about: California's Department of Insurance (CDI) lets you check any agent's or agency's license status online before you sign anything.
Here's what you can look up:
Whether their license is active and in good standing
Any concluded disciplinary actions or enforcement orders on record
How long they've been licensed and what lines of insurance they're authorized to sell.

How to check:
Go to CDI's "Check a License" tool: cdicloud.insurance.ca.gov

Search by the agent's name or license number
Look for any "Orders" listed~~click through for details if there are any

A few things worth knowing:
Not every complaint filed with CDI shows up here ~~only concluded disciplinary actions are public. Complaints under investigation are confidential.
If you're comparing agents, it's worth asking each one directly whether they've had any DOI actions and to explain if so.
Always get quotes and coverage details in writing, and compare what's actually covered ~~not just the premium~~ before switching.

Genuinely asking — does this seem backwards to anyone else, or is it just me?

My business is based in Placerville, but we serve a lot of clients in South Lake Tahoe — same county, El Dorado. I wanted to go door-to-door there and let the community know about what we offer. Simple enough, right? Not quite — I had to register my business license with the city and pay for a permit just to hand out flyers. Why? Because the weather is unpredictable, and they were worried the flyers could blow away and end up in the lake.

Fair enough. But here's what gets me: the people who actually litter — who leave real trash on our beaches and streets — face little to no consequence. No permit required to trash the lake, apparently. Meanwhile, I'm out here jumping through hoops and paying fees just to reach my own community responsibly.
I'd love to see that same level of care applied to actual litter on our beaches and streets — maybe through a toll to enter, or permit-only parking in residential areas. Small business owners like me are already doing our part; it'd be great to see the same standard applied everywhere.
