Closing at the end of August? Your first mortgage payment may not be due until October 1.

That's because mortgage payments are generally paid in arrears—you pay for the previous month's interest rather than the month ahead. At closing, prepaid interest typically covers the period from your closing date through the end of that month, and your first regular payment comes later.

It's one of those little details that can make planning for closing—and everything that comes with moving into a new home—a whole lot easier.
