Many of you know that Stone Pier Capital supports the revitalization of Aliquippa, PA, a once hugely successful town in heavily industrialized Beaver County near Pittsburgh on the Ohio River. Aliquippa once had one steel plant that provided high paying, quality jobs for 11,000 workers! As steel production moved overseas in the early 1980s, the mill is gone, but Aliquippa still stands, a bit battered and even devastated over the years, but strong and resilient in spirit, and clearly coming back.
Stone Pier believes that despite the amazing transformation of Beaver County by the nation's largest construction project, the building of the nearby Shell Pennsylvania Chemicals / Shell Polymers Petrochemical Complex, Beaver County cannot be "back" until "Aliquippa is back." Therefore, Stone Pier supports Aliquippa businesses on it main street, Franklin Avenue (helping to revive one of the most devastated parts of Aliquippa) by an annual corporate membership at the now famed Puro Cigar Lounge, and having events there sponsored by Stone Pier Managing Director Dale Killmeyer. A foundation that Stone Pier Managing Director Charlie Schliebs has the honor to chair, the Huddle Up for Kids Foundation, led by longtime NFL guard and Alliant Insurance Services Vice President Todd Kalis, has supported Aliquippa High School and other needy causes in Beaver County through its annual Shell / Pro Football Alumni Community Awards Gala, and Stone Pier and Huddle Up supports the creation of quality educational and career opportunities for all Aliquippa and Beaver County residents and students through a variety of initiatives. Aliquippa and its small but incredibly mighty high school are known for turning out amazing people who triumph and persevere. Thanks to Head Coach Mike Warfield and Mayor Dwan B Walker.

One big inspirational part of that is Aliquippa Senior High School. While tiny compared to most high schools in PA, Aliquippa turns out an amazing number of D1 college athletes, and NFL stars. The school teaches people how to be responsible adults. This year, despite being in the smallest size category of schools, Aliquippa won the state championship in Class 4A. The Quip Nation football banquet for the 77 members of the team, cheerleading squad and band needs sponsors, as indicated below.

Stone Pier is proud to sponsor six, and Huddle Up for Kids Foundation is proud to sponsor another six, for a total of 12. They need 77. Jump on this one to show support for Aliquippa. One sponsorship only cost $40. Thanks for listening.

Cross-posted from LinkedIn, this Stone Pier post focuses on a lesson learned from the largest M&A deals--the need to include truly objective advisors in an M&A transaction--noting that the same applies in the lower middle market that Stone Pier Capital serves.

This month a number of articles came into my news feed regarding Roundup (glyphosate), the ubiquitous herbicide from Monsanto, now Bayer. Ever since my agricultural chemical clients (competitors of Monsanto) advised me in the 90s to never use Roundup, especially where children or animals may be expo

We are going to have to use our page more often! What a great assignment this was--to act as exclusive financial advisor to a global Italian industrial automation/systems integration firm and do a nationwide search to determine its first US acquisition! A year long process from start of the search to closing of the transaction this week! Dale Killmeyer and I and the rest of the Stone Pier team were honored to have worked with Prisma Impianti, SpA CEO Manuel Alfonso and his team.

Prisma buys Premier Integration, based in Girard, Ohio.

Stone Pier's principals believe that it is important to be leaders in nonprofit, charitable activities for the benefit of the Company's service region. This past weekend, Stone Pier co-founder Charlie Schliebs presented, together with Pro Football Alumni President Todd Kalis and Chevron executives Laurie Serwinski and Trip Oliver, a check for over $60,000 to Special Olympics PA at the organization's annual Polar Plunge (brrr!). Getting to know over the summer and this weekend some of the kids involved in the Special Olympics programs, and their parents, was the reward for this activity. Charlie will be heavily involved in Pro Football Alumni charity work in 2017-- in more events than ever held before, with great event title sponsors like Chevron, and with a partial beneficiary across all events of the new 501 (c) (3) organization, the Huddle Up for Kids Foundation.

The boom is already here. At Stone Pier Capital we work hard to know which private equity groups are the best match for our family-owned business clients, especially when the family business wants to partner with a private equity group that takes a minority interest. We also counsel the the family business clients to consider various other alternatives that perhaps they did not think about, where the family's goals can be accomplished without a sale or even a partial sale of the company. Such assignments are genuinely professionally and personally satisfying, and the family-owned business clients often become great friends and not "just" clients.

Looks like there's a bonanza of deals to be had, but families might be disappointed once they sell

2016 is off to a spectacular start at Stone Pier, with challenging and interesting M&A deals and other projects filling our dancecard. Earlier this month, Charlie Schliebs of Stone Pier was interviewed on marketing guru Dave Mastovich's podcast. It is a two-part podcast and includes a wide range of topics, including of course Stone Pier Capital and Charlie's nonprofit passion, the Energy Innovation Center. If you ever listen to podcasts, audiobooks or talk radio, you may like it! http://boldsolutions-nobs.com/

Just as the NFL Alumni "Caring for Kids" Charity Golf Classic became the area's number 1 charity golf event over the last fifteen years, now generously title sponsored by the wonderful people at Chevron, the NFL Alumni "Klays for Kids" Shooting Clays fundraiser has over the past ten plus years also become the region's leading charitable clays event. This year's Klays for Kids charity recipient was the Folds of Honor organization, providing scholarships to the children of killed-in-action servicemen and women. I cannot think of a better recipient.

Stone Pier Capital is proud of its association with the NFL Alumni and both events, and if you have any interest in participating in, or even sponsoring at some level, either event in 2016, please contact Charlie Schliebs. You will not want to miss the fun with many Hall of Fame and other former NFL players from both the Steelers and many other NFL teams--they come from all over the nation because they know the events here are the best!

By the way, the success of these events is due to the drive, energy and creativity of NFL veteran Todd Kalis, President of the NFL Alumni Pittsburgh Chapter, who for 15 years has led all the chapters in raising money for children's charities. Thanks to Todd for all he does.
