Join Gabby and Jeff Morella for their session titled "Advanced Captive Concepts and Legal Update" at our 2022 Annual Meeting!

This session will discuss the more complex topics of self-funding and captive insurance, including risk distribution and risk shifting. We will explore the current Reinsurance and Retrocession Agreements of the medTRANS captive insurance program to understand the dynamics of how risk is shared among the collective captive participants. We will also provide an update on the current legal landscape regarding micro-captive insurance transactions, specifically relating to Internal Revenue Service review of micro-captives. Last, we will review the Form 8886 filing requirement, as set forth in Notice 2016-66 released by the Internal Revenue Service, which provides a yearly tax filing requirement for participants involved in a micro-captive transaction.

Join Phil Holowka for TWO of our sessions during our 2022 Annual Meeting! You can listen in to "Healthcare Financing and Accounting" and/or "Intro to Medical Stop-Loss Captives."

Proper Stop-Loss Accounting and Reporting for the Employer will provide a detailed accounting for properly booking various stop-loss policy attributes into the Health Plan sponsor’s PnL and Balance Sheet. We will introduce how stop-loss premiums should to be reported and how proper reporting of monthly health plan claims reduce claims liability within a policy year. We will talk about the difference between policy year and treaty year and how to properly record an IBNR liability. The core talking points will provide the CFO with a clear picture of past expenses and future liabilities.

Intro to Medical Stop-Loss Captives will introduce the various captive structures in a compare and contrast conversation. Not all captives are created equal! This session will allow the attendee to understand why there are so many different structures and how each structure best fits within the employer's organizational culture. The medTRANS model has developed over the years due to lessons learned by the legacy members. Those tough lessons motivated medTRANS to change its core structure to what it is today! The takeaway points will shed light on what questions every employer should ask when considering a medical stop-loss captive solution.
