🚢🏾 Sidewalk Improvements Continue Along Herron Avenue!

The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) is making significant progress on the Herron Avenue Critical Sidewalk Gaps Project in the Hill District!

Recent improvements are addressing missing and deteriorating sidewalks, creating safer and more accessible walking routes for residents.

Herron Avenue serves as an important connection to churches, community centers, public transit, and other neighborhood destinations. These upgrades are especially important for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families who rely on safe pedestrian access.

Improving walkability, pedestrian safety, and neighborhood connectivity are key priorities of the Greater Hill District Master Plan. The Hill CDC supports continued investment in accessible sidewalks and pedestrian infrastructure throughout the Greater Hill District.

πŸ—οΈ Proposed $170M Development in the Middle Hill District Raises Questions About Community Impact!

A proposed $170 million housing development could bring hundreds of new apartments to the Middle Hill District, transforming vacant land along and around Herron Avenue.

New York-based developers JK Equities and Manor Park Ventures have secured exclusive negotiation rights with the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) for 90 publicly owned parcels, with plans for a four-phase residential development.

As plans move forward, housing affordability, displacement prevention, and community benefits remain key priorities. New development should align with the Greater Hill District Master Plan and reflect the needs of existing residents.

The developers have submitted their proposal to the Hill CDC’s Development Review Panel (DRP) and are scheduled to present on November 4. This review will provide an opportunity to evaluate the project’s alignment with community-established priorities.

🌱🐒 Learning About Greenspace Stewardship with the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium!

First-grade students from Miller African-Centered Academy and A. Leo Weil Elementary School recently joined the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for a fun, hands-on learning experience focused on environmental stewardship and caring for our shared greenspaces!

Throughout the visit, students explored the greenspace, identified natural resources that wildlife could use for food and shelter, and learned about the important role they can play in protecting and maintaining green spaces in their community.

Students also had the opportunity to meet a special guest, Grace the turtle, from the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium!

Through interactive activities and exploration, students discovered how even small actions can make a difference in creating healthier, more welcoming environments for people and wildlife.

A special thank you to the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium for helping inspire the next generation of environmental stewards in the Hill District!

🏫 Support continues to grow for saving Miller African-Centered Academy!

Parents, residents, and community stakeholders gathered outside Miller African-Centered Academy on Friday to oppose Pittsburgh Public Schools' decision to close the historic Hill District school at the end of the school year.

Miller's roots trace back to the first school for Black children in Pittsburgh, established at Bethel AME Church in the 1830s. For generations, the school has played an important role in educating Black children and preserving the Hill District's cultural heritage.

Community members are calling for the closure decision to be reversed, greater transparency from Pittsburgh Public Schools, and renewed investment in Miller's academic and cultural excellence.

Preserving Miller means protecting an important part of the Hill District's history and ensuring future generations have access to that legacy.

🌱 A Great Day at Nafasi Greenspace Harvest Fest!

Thank you to everyone who joined the Hill CDC and community partners this past Saturday for the Nafasi Greenspace Harvest Fest at Nafasi on Centre!

Residents and families came together to learn more about plans for the new Nafasi Greenspace, share their ideas, and take an active role in shaping a greener, more welcoming space in the Hill District.

🌳 Throughout the event, community partners, including Tree Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, Allegheny Land Trust, and Nafasi on Centre, engaged children and residents through interactive activities and conversations about their role in creating and caring for the future greenspace. The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium even brought a special guest, a live opossum, giving attendees an opportunity to learn more about local wildlife!

πŸ—³οΈ Community members also had the opportunity to vote on their preferred location for the new greenspace, ensuring that residents of all ages could share their preferences and help guide the project's next steps.

πŸ’š A special thank you to our community partners and everyone who participated! Your ideas, feedback, and involvement are essential to creating a space that reflects the needs and priorities of the Hill District community.
