Today we celebrate 10 years at Beratung.

I think about that time of looking at Amanda and saying, let’s burn the boats. We sold our house and put everything we had into a vision God placed in our hearts.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only about one in three new businesses is still operating after ten years. Beratung is one of them.

As I reflect on these ten years, it’s hard not to get emotional. It started with just me and zero clients. We are further along after ten years than I dreamed of at the beginning. We often overestimate what we can do in one year, but we underestimate what God can do in ten years of faithful obedience to His calling.

It hasn’t been easy. The life cycle of an entrepreneur goes from the excitement of the vision, to thinking you’re never going to make it, to having a few wins and saying I’m back in business. There were so many times we wanted to give up. Very few people could have stayed supportive through the frustration and the sleepless nights the way Amanda did.

Amanda, thank you for being my number one cheerleader, for respecting me, and for believing in this crazy vision that God placed in our hearts. I never said it would be easy. I also never said it’d be this hard. Thank you for never giving up.

To our clients, thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you. We’re nothing without you. To the clients who came with me the first week our doors were open, I’ll never forget your belief in me. Thank you to Jim and Mike Sullivan for becoming part of Beratung, and to the clients who believed in them and now believe in us. And to every family who has joined us since, thank you for letting us do life together with you.

To every Beratunger who has been through our doors, thank you for believing in this crazy vision. Every one of you has left your thumbprint on me and on this company.

Life is full of wins and lessons, not wins and losses. I’ve made more mistakes than right calls over these ten years, and I wouldn’t trade any of them. Those mistakes were the way God was forging this vision.

We enter the next decade renewed, working toward the 412 Vision. We don’t want to be the largest firm in town. We want an impact so great our community would weep if we closed our doors.

Here’s to the next ten years.

On this day 25 years ago, 246 people boarded their morning flights.

2,606 people commuted to work in the morning. 343 firefighters started their morning shift. 60 police officers started their morning patrol. 8 paramedics started their day morning shift.

None of them saw past 10:28am on Sept 11, 2001.

In one single moment life may never be the same.

As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

Could you swim for twelve hours without once touching the ground?

That is the rule at the Three Rivers Marathon Swim - 3RMS

No touching the bottom to rest.
No holding onto a boat.
If you stop swimming, you tread water.

A cap and a swimsuit is all you are allowed to wear.

This is the ninth year Beratung Advisors has sponsored the race, and our founder Greg Furer captains the safety boat.

The distance is 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) through all three of Pittsburgh’s rivers.

10km in the Allegheny.
10km in the Monongahela.
10km in the Ohio.

The fast ones finish in about seven and a half hours.

The cutoff is twelve.

The current was working against them this year, from the north end of Brunot Island in the Ohio all the way out to the Hot Metal Bridge in the Mon.

Seven swimmers started. Three finished all 30 kilometers.

Stephen Rouch, 8 hours 35 minutes.
Peter Shauger, 10 hours 24 minutes.
Amy Frick, 10 hours 46 minutes, on her first 3RMS!

Stephen and Peter each just completed their third 3RMS!

They join Judy Caves and Christopher Graefe as the only four swimmers who have ever done it three times.

Norm Albert, Jeannie Zappe, and Eric Schall each made 20 kilometers.
Pantea Tantanella made 10km.

Swimming 5km in open water is a serious accomplishment. 5km in current, in a working river, is something almost nobody reading this could do on their best day.

Every swimmer out there did something incredible, whether they touched the finish or not.

Darren Miller built this race and has held the entry cost flat since 2013 so more of the money goes where it belongs. Tens of thousands of dollars have gone to the Forever Fund at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, which helps local families cover the cost of infant cardiothoracic surgery.

Big dreams take big teams!

Judy and Norm Caves opened their home again and fed everybody at the race banquet. Corey Berkey ran an es**rt boat for his third year.

Pittsburgh River Rescue and Pittsburgh Police had eyes on the water all day in case anything went wrong.

Greg was not out there alone either. Scott Steiner, CFP®, Christopher Dulovich, CFP®, AWMA®, and Michael Sullivan, CFP® all gave up their Saturday to live our core value of contagious generosity.

The best part of the day is taking the swimmers out to the starting line before sunrise and pulling each one out of the water when their day is finished.

In between you get to hear where they came from, what they are training for, and what they are carrying with them out there.

Congratulations to every one of this year’s swimmers.

Thank you for reminding the rest of us what it looks like to set a big goal and keep going long after it stops being fun.

What is a paraplanner?

Most people outside this profession have never heard the word, and that is a shame, because it might be the best job in financial planning that nobody talks about.

Here is what a paraplanner actually does.

They build the financial plan behind every client meeting. They run the numbers, model the scenarios, and pressure test the strategy. They take a client's whole financial life, the accounts, the goals, the worries, the what ifs, and turn it into one clear plan the client can actually follow.

When you sit down with your advisor and everything just makes sense, there is a good chance a paraplanner built the thing you are looking at.

At most firms it is treated as a support role. A stepping stone. The person in the background. Here it is different. For us it is the path to becoming a financial planner, and that path is written down and handed to you on day one, so you always know exactly what you are working toward.

Here is the part that matters most to us.

We have a vision we call the 412 Vision. It is the whole reason this firm exists, and we are not getting there without paraplanners. The plans do not get built without them. Our clients do not get served without them. We cannot reach our vision without them.

So this is not us filling a seat. This is us looking for someone we genuinely need. Our clients need you. We need you too.

What we are looking for. One to four years in financial planning. The kind of detail oriented that catches what everybody else skims right past. And somebody who wants to grow into a planner, not just sit next to one.

We are hiring. Could it be you?

When should yinz take Social Security?

70? 62? Full retirement age?

It can feel like a lot of people are screaming rules at you. You have to take it at 70. You have to take it at 65. Pick an age, somebody out there will defend it.

Our answer is different for each and every client. We have recommended every age from 62 to 70.

They have rules of thumb because they're looking at Social Security in isolation. They're answering one question: how do I maximize Social Security? And if that's your only question, the answer often is 70. Wait, get the biggest check. They're right, if the only thing you're solving for is how much money comes out of Social Security over your lifetime.

That answer works if you live long enough to collect on it. For the couple in this video, that's age 86 and 77 respectively. Run the general math and the crossover for waiting from 62 to 70 usually lands somewhere around 80 or 81.

Maybe you'll live that long. I don't know.

And that's actually the argument for waiting. The bigger check is real longevity protection, and outliving your money is one of the biggest risks in retirement. That part is true. What nobody tells you is what waiting costs you in the meantime, because those checks come from somewhere else in the plan while you wait.

I don't care how much you get out of Social Security. I care if you're able to live the life you want to live.

So we run it through the financial plan instead. Their family core values, their priorities, their goals. Then we test every age from 62 to 70 and watch what it does to the plan.

Sometimes the bigger Social Security check makes the plan weaker. We'll take the stronger plan every time.

It doesn't stop there. Are you married? That changes the dynamics completely. It hits your taxes. It hits the withdrawal rates on the rest of your accounts.

There's a lot of variables here, and once you make that decision it's almost impossible to reverse.

It's too big a decision to make on your own.

Scammers are targeting people with fraudulent phone calls, emails, and text messages, falsely claiming that they’ve missed jury duty and threatening prosecution if they don’t comply. These criminals are pressuring residents to provide personal, confidential information, putting them at risk of identity theft or fraud. Sometimes, they may also threaten fines and jail time to create a sense of urgency.

❗ What you must know:
These communications are NOT from the U.S. courts.
Federal courts will never ask for sensitive information over the phone or by email.
Don't provide any personal information if you receive a suspicious call or message.
If contacted, report the incident to the Clerk of Court’s office in your district.

You fly. You get strong like a tiger. You stretch up tall. You jump, you swim, you grab your neighbor's hand, and you circle up.
