Duck Season, Rabbit Season – Earnings Season
When Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are having their discussion with Elmer Fudd, there is a lot of confusion about which season it is right now. It is pretty clear that Congress is making noise about Tax Season and the Federal Reserve is making noise about Interest Rate Season, but actually we are in the beginning of Earnings Season. Each quarter publicly traded companies announce their earnings. The analysts are able to determine whether companies have been successful meeting their goals, then they forecast how those companies will perform in the future.

September Markets

Since 1926, September has been the worst performing month for equities with an average return of -.7%. This past September followed that trend for equities, with the S&P 500 down 4.7%, the Dow off 4.2%, and Russell off 2.9%. At Guyasuta Investment Advisors we try to protect portfolios against large volatile market movements.

Quarterly Estimated Taxes
As summer gives way to fall, the big stories in the news are turning to taxes. The government has introduced some new spending plans but needs the revenue to be able to pay for those programs. We anticipate that taxes will rise for corporations and high-income individuals but maybe not as much of an increase that was originally proposed. This is also a reminder for those that need to pay their quarterly taxes.

Federal Reserve Bond Buying
Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell reinforced the message that the bond buying may taper by the end of the year, but that did not mean that they would also start to raise interest rates soon thereafter. The unemployment rate for July dropped to 5.4%, although consumer prices and the Producer Price index increased by 0.5% and 1.0% respectively. Chairman Powell has done a good job of telling the markets the Federal Reserve strategy and sticking to that story.
