He’s no longer a School Resource Officer, but Brentwood PD’s Sergeant Brouillette is as dedicated as ever to keeping our schools safe.
Last week, Sergeant Brouillette provided ALICE training to Pioneer Elementary School Staff. ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate, is proactive training that teaches individuals what to do during an active shooter event. The goal of this training is to empower teachers, staff and students to make decisions that can make a difference should a horrific incident like this occur.
Sergeant Brouillette, who was a former Brentwood PD School Resource Officer for Heritage High School, wanted to make a difference and ensure students, staff, and law enforcement are prepared during an active shooter incident. He recalls walking though Heritage High School as a School Resource Officer and having an overwhelming feeling of responsibility for keeping the school safe. To address this, he approached school administrators and the police department who both agreed training and education for an active shooter event needed to be done.
Both the police department and school administrators began working together to develop and implement the ALICE model, which is now taught to our Brentwood schools today.
“When it comes to a school safety plan and training for our teachers, students, and staff, we have to come together to make it happen. In law enforcement this is a SHALL, not a SHOULD,” said Sergeant Brouillette. Sergeant Brouillette continues to provide training to staff from BUSD and LUHSD annually.
Although he is no longer a School Resource Officer the position holds a special place in his heart, and his passion for ALICE training has led him to teach hundreds of school staff and students over the years.
