MEDIA RELEASE
Motor Vehicle and Theft increase

May 27, 2026
Released by Maj. A. Nance

PITTSBURG, KANSAS –
The Pittsburg Police Department would like to make the public aware of a recent increase in attempted vehicle thefts, vehicle thefts, and related criminal damage involving Kia and Hyundai vehicles. This increase is part of a nationwide trend that has affected communities across the country over the past several years.

These incidents are primarily occurring during overnight and early morning hours, with suspects targeting Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Investigators believe many of the incidents may be connected to a small group of individuals; however, the investigations remain ongoing.

Detectives and patrol officers are actively investigating these incidents and have increased proactive patrols citywide to address these concerns.

The Pittsburg Police Department urges Kia and Hyundai owners to review the important safety information and security updates provided by the manufacturers:

For Hyundai Click https://www.hyundaiantitheft.com/ #:~:text=Solutions%20for%20Affected%20Customers&text=Our%20goal%20is%20to%20get,partnership%20with%20local%20communities%20here

While these incidents remain under investigation, there are several steps vehicle owners can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim:

• Park vehicles in well-lit areas whenever possible
• Use steering wheel locks or other anti-theft devices
• Lock vehicle doors and close windows, even when parked at home
• Remove valuables from plain view
• Utilize alarms, immobilizers, GPS tracking devices, or other security features
• Never leave a vehicle running and unattended
• Do not leave keys or key fobs inside vehicles
• Install security cameras capable of recording and storing video footage of parked vehicles
• Report suspicious activity immediately, including individuals checking vehicle door handles or lingering around parked vehicles during overnight hours

If your vehicle is stolen or tampered with, report it immediately. Prompt reporting can assist officers in identifying suspects and recovering stolen vehicles.

Suspicious activity can be reported to dispatch at (620) 231-1700.
The Pittsburg Police Department appreciates the community’s continued vigilance and cooperation as officers work to address these incidents.

The Pittsburg Police Department continues to actively investigate these incidents. Anyone having information related to this incident is urged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at (620) 231-1700, or at our automated tip line, (620) 231-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.
