This is not getting any better. How in the world can they combat this with such a drastic budget cut over the last five years? Where have those funds been reallocated to?? That would be interesting to see.

The Internal Revenue Service discovered last month that criminals accessed around 104,000 tax returns through its Get Transcript application and tried to get hold of approximately 100,000 more.

The Internal Revenue Service has agreed to change its policy on identity theft and provide victims with copies of the fraudulent tax returns that have been filed under their names by scammers.

I was reading an article on Accounting Today website about an accountant who was sentenced to 5 years jail time, 3 years probation, and $753,477 in restitution for the IRS. What could he have done for this kind of fine, he filed fraudulent returns for his clients adding dependents and exceptions. He would cut the clients a check for the refund and have the larger refund deposited in one of his accounts. OUCH!!! I can't imagine being one of those taxpayers!!

I found a great article on Accounting Today website that agrees that it is time to start gearing up for the 2013 tax season. Tax and accounting Firm BlumShapiro gives 5 good reasons to start now:
1. You need at least 6 months for planning

2. Uncertainty due to election year and possible Affordable Care Act

3. Bush Tax Cuts expire at the end of the year. Don’t lose out on potential tax breaks.

4. Estate Tax is set to Increase and the lifetime exemption will decrease by $4.12 million.

5. The Alternative Tax Exemption is decreasing so you may have to pay the AMT patch.

Not being prepared for these changes can cost you more then expected. Be sure to contact your tax consultant now to ensure you are not missing out or paying too much.
