Always...ALWAYS maximize your life insurance through work. But than remember... You can't take life insurance with you from them when you retire or get a different career. Group plans cover less perils. If you become disabled you no longer qualify in most cases. When you switch careers, depending on age and health, you may no longer qualify for other policies. Talk to me about getting something outside of work, so you are never stuck in a bad situation.

There are more reasons to purchase auto insurance than only because you HAVE to and the law says so. And even if you just feel like you are "donating" to the insurance company because you have never had to use it...IF you DO have to use it, hopefully the policy is set up correctly so it takes care of you in the best way possible. Don't go for the cheapest. Protect yourself correctly.
