Interest rates moved lower on Friday after President Trump released a Truth Social statement weighing a “massive increase” in tariffs on China in response to China imposing export controls on Rare Earths.

The government remains shut down, therefore the economic data releases remain limited.

Mortgage applications were down -4.7% WoW, but are up 16.4% YoY.

The Purchase Index was down -1.2% WoW, up 14.3% YoY, and the Refi Index was down -7.6% WoW, up 18.3% YoY.

With a lot of talk in recent days about an AI Bubble, equities broke below their narrow up trend after the President’s Truth Social statement and safe haven assets such as gold and treasuries rallied.

Fed Funds Futures are pricing in 95% chance of a 25 bps rate cut in October and 88% chance of an additional 25 bps rate cut in December.

Rates finished the week lower, roughly flat to the close two weeks ago, with the 10 Year yield at 4.12%. The government remains shut down; therefore, we did not receive the Non-Farm Payrolls report that is produced on the first Friday of every month. Jobs data we did receive continues to show a labor market in contraction. ADP Employment Change revealed 32k jobs lost in September, ISM Manufacturing and Services both show employment in contraction. Fed Funds Futures are pricing in a 95% chance of another 25 bps rate cut at the end of October.
