Retirement Vocabulary: Catch-Up Contributions

If you're age 50 or older, you may be eligible to contribute more to certain retirement accounts than younger savers under current IRS rules.

These additional contributions, known as catch-up contributions, are designed to help individuals who want to increase their retirement savings as they get closer to retirement.

Keep in mind that contribution limits and eligibility requirements can change over time, so it's important to review the current IRS rules each year.

Every extra dollar you save today has the potential to strengthen your retirement strategy tomorrow.

Medicare prescription drug coverage will have a $2,400 annual out-of-pocket threshold in 2027.

That's an important protection for people with Medicare Part D coverage.

But it doesn't mean total prescription and healthcare expenses are limited to $2,400.

The threshold applies to covered Part D prescription drug spending under the program's rules.

Monthly plan premiums, medications that aren't covered by the plan, and other healthcare expenses need to be considered separately.

Before choosing coverage for 2027, it can be helpful to review the prescriptions you currently take, the plan's covered drug list, and the total expected costs.

A spending limit is useful information. Understanding what it includes is just as important.

💡 Did You Know?

💼 In 2006, employers began offering Roth 401(k) accounts, giving eligible employees another way to save for retirement through their workplace.

💰 Unlike traditional 401(k) contributions, Roth 401(k) contributions are made with after-tax dollars. If IRS requirements are met, qualified withdrawals in retirement can be tax-free.

📊 Whether a traditional or Roth 401(k) is the better fit depends on factors such as your current tax situation, future expectations, and retirement goals.

Still working after age 65 and contributing to a Health Savings Account (HSA)?

There is a Medicare enrollment rule worth understanding before you retire.

When someone enrolls in Medicare after age 65, premium-free Part A coverage can begin retroactively, generally up to six months before the application date.

Once Medicare coverage begins, that person is no longer eligible to contribute to an HSA.

That means continuing HSA contributions too close to Medicare enrollment could create an excess-contribution issue.

For someone planning to retire later than 65, the timing of Medicare enrollment and HSA contributions deserves attention.

This is separate from the annual Medicare Open Enrollment period that begins October 15.

Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15. But there is an important distinction between being able to change your Medicare coverage and being guaranteed access to supplemental insurance.

During annual Open Enrollment, Medicare beneficiaries can switch between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare.¹

However, switching to Original Medicare does not necessarily guarantee that someone will qualify for the Medigap policy they want.

Under federal law, Medigap generally has a one-time, six-month Open Enrollment period that begins when someone is at least 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B.²

Outside that period, an insurance company may be permitted to evaluate medical history, charge more, or deny an application unless a guaranteed-issue protection applies. Additional protections may also exist under state law.

This creates a planning consideration that can be overlooked when comparing premiums and coverage options.

Before switching from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare, it is important to understand whether supplemental coverage will be available and under what conditions.

The financial implications of a healthcare decision can extend beyond the coverage selected for the coming year.

Retirement Vocabulary: Cash Flow

Cash flow is the money coming in and going out over a period of time. In retirement, understanding your cash flow means knowing where your income comes from, what your regular expenses are, and how those two work together.

A clear picture of your cash flow can help you make informed decisions about spending, saving, and withdrawals throughout retirement. Because everyone's financial situation is different, reviewing your income and expenses regularly can be an important part of staying on track.

A national Medicare premium average can be good news without being your retirement healthcare budget.

CMS projects that the weighted average monthly Medicare Advantage premium will decline from $14.37 in 2026 to $12.00 in 2027. The average stand-alone Part D premium is projected to increase by less than $1, from $35.09 to $36.¹

Those are useful numbers.

They still do not tell an individual retiree what healthcare will cost next year.

The plan someone actually uses may have different premiums, deductibles, copays, drug coverage, provider networks and other benefits. CMS specifically encourages beneficiaries to review their current coverage because plan costs and benefits can change from one year to the next.¹

Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15.²

For retirement planning, the takeaway is broader than choosing a health plan.

Healthcare belongs in the retirement cash-flow conversation.

An average tells us what is happening across millions of beneficiaries. A retirement plan has to account for what is happening in one household.

💡 Did You Know?

💰 In 1997, the Taxpayer Relief Act created the Roth IRA, giving eligible Americans a new way to save for retirement using after-tax contributions.

📈 Unlike many traditional retirement accounts, qualified withdrawals from a Roth IRA can be tax-free if IRS requirements are met, making it a valuable planning tool for many investors.

🗓️ Whether a Roth IRA is appropriate depends on factors such as your income, tax situation, and long-term retirement goals.

Do you spend part of the year in Arizona and part somewhere else?

Your Medicare review may need one more question: Where will you actually receive healthcare during the year?

Medicare Advantage plan networks can matter for seasonal residents.

Medicare says HMO members generally need to receive care from providers in the plan's network, with exceptions such as emergency care, out-of-area urgent care and temporary out-of-area dialysis. PPO members can generally use out-of-network providers for covered services, but usually pay more.

If you divide your time between states, consider reviewing:
- whether your regular physicians are in-network where you spend your time
- how non-emergency care works while you are away
- what out-of-network care could cost
- whether your prescription coverage works conveniently in both locations

Medicare Open Enrollment begins October 15.

Healthcare coverage is not only about the premium. Where you live, travel and receive care can matter too.

Three recent economic updates point in different directions.

1. The Federal Reserve raised its target interest-rate range to 3.75%–4.00% at its September meeting.¹
2. August PCE inflation was 3.4% from a year earlier, with core PCE at 3.0%.²
3. September payroll employment increased by just 29,000, while unemployment was 4.2%.³

For someone approaching or living in retirement, that mix is a useful reminder.

Economic data matters. But a retirement portfolio should not be managed as a vote on the latest data point.

One report may strengthen the case for caution. Another may point toward slower growth. Markets can interpret the same information differently from one day to the next.

A retirement plan has a different job.

It should help determine what money needs to support near-term spending, what money has a longer time horizon, how much risk the plan can reasonably absorb, and what changes would actually justify adjusting the strategy.

The economy will keep producing new information.

The planning question is whether that information changes something meaningful about your retirement assumptions.
