With Presidents Day passing it made me think of one of our founding fathers and his annuity story. Mr. Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin requested upon his death that the $2,000 income he made as Governor of Pennsylvania be divided equally into two annuities. He wanted to leave a legacy benefitting the cities of Philadelphia and Boston.

200 years later in 1990, the balance in the Philly account was valued at $2 million and the Boston trust account was valued at $4.5 million. This allowed the Boston trust account to pay out income for more than 200 years while later in 1993 officials voted to end the City of Boston annuity and use the lump sum of cash that it accumulated.
