Summer is in full effect. Swimming often makes the summer heat more enjoyable.

Here’s some tips for keeping people who cannot swim, safe.

* Never leave a child near a pool unattended even for a moment.
* Practice “touch” supervision with children younger than 5 years. This means that an adult is within an arm’s length of the child at all times.
* Enclose your pool in a safety fence at least 4 feet high with slats no more than 4 inches apart.
* Do not use swimming aids, such as water wings or puddle jumpers, as a substitute for adult supervision.
* Learn CPR and post CPR instructions in the pool area. Have a phone nearby so you can call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Happy 4th of July!

Here are a few safety tips when setting off fireworks.

*Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

*Keep a bucket of water, fire extinguisher, or garden hose nearby in case of an accidental fire or other mishap.

* Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.

* After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.

Trick or treat season is upon us and it’s important to keep our children safe!

Here’s a few tips to ensure their safety on Halloween night!

*Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

*Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.

*Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

*When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
