announced a 3.6% COLA for 2027 benefits.
Most people know what this means, but for those who don’t that means that anyone receiving Social Security benefits in 2026 will receive an increase in their payments that they receive starting January 2027. This is the time of year that everyone waits for, for planning and budgeting and seeing what they can expect moving forward.
For those that are considering whether or not to start receiving their Social Security benefits in 2027, here’s a few pointers:
1) January is typically a good month to start your benefit payment records. Even if you plan to work part of 2027, and you’re under FRA (Full Retirement Age), you can potentially be eligible for a benefit payment each month -as long as you won’t gross more than the 2027 earnings limit.
2) If you’re a Widow or Widower and thinking about receiving benefits from a spouse whose passed on, age 60 is the earliest you can look into collecting survivors’ benefits (not based on disability). Your earnings limits are the same as those limits for individuals who are under FRA.
