Hurricane season can bring strong winds💨, heavy rain, flooding, and extended power💥 outages.

➡️Preparing your home ahead of time can help protect your property, reduce damage, and keep your family safer when a storm approaches. The best time to get ready is before a hurricane is in the forecast.

🔺Your roof is one of your home’s first lines of defense during a storm. Check for loose or damaged shingles, weak flashing, and any areas that may already be leaking. Make repairs as early as possible.

Clean out your gutters and downspouts so rainwater can flow away from your home. Clogged gutters can lead to water backing up under the roof or pooling around the foundation.

🔻High winds can turn small outdoor objects into dangerous projectiles. Make sure your windows and doors are strong and properly sealed. If you live in a hurricane-prone area, consider installing storm shutters or keeping plywood on hand to board up windows if needed.

Check exterior doors for loose hinges or weak frames, and reinforce garage doors, which are especially vulnerable during hurricanes.

🔺Overhanging branches and weak trees can break during strong winds and damage your home, vehicles, or power lines. Trim back branches that are close to the house and remove any dead or unstable trees if possible.

Also, secure or store outdoor furniture, grills, garden tools, potted plants, and decorations. These items can become hazardous in high winds.

🔻Flooding can cause severe damage even if your home is not directly hit by hurricane-force winds. Make sure your yard drains properly and that water flows away from your foundation.

If your area is prone to flooding, consider using sandbags, installing a sump pump, or sealing foundation cracks. Knowing whether you are in a flood zone can also help you prepare more effectively.

🔺Power outages are common during hurricanes and may last for days. If you have a generator, test it before the season begins and make sure you know how to use it safely. Keep extra fuel stored properly and never run a generator indoors or near windows.
