September is ***dePreventionAwarenessMonth, and it’s an important reminder that prevention is built in the everyday moments of connection we create with one another. In the workplace and beyond, reaching out, checking in, and making space for honest conversation can help reduce stigma and remind people they are not alone. We are stronger together when we look out for each other and make it easier to ask for help before a situation becomes a crisis.

If you are struggling, feeling overwhelmed, or worried about someone else, support is available. You can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, 24/7. The support is free and confidential, and help is also available via chat at 988lifeline.org. Your voice matters, and reaching out is a sign of strength. ***dePrevention ***dePreventionMonth

Congratulations to our Graham Company softball team for representing once again at the Philadelphia Insurance Companies Softball League Tournament! While we didn’t bring home the trophy this year, the team showed up in a big way—finishing Top 5 out of 30 teams.

Most importantly, the tournament delivered where it matters most: $102,736 raised for the Philadelphia Children's Alliance, breaking the six-figure mark for the first time. Thank you to everyone who contributed time, energy, and support throughout the season and on tournament day.

Wildfire season can affect job sites far beyond the fire perimeter—and for organizations with outdoor teams, smoke, heat, and rapidly changing conditions can create real safety and operational challenges. In our latest blog post, Joseph Dorr, CIH, CSP, CPHRM, CHSP shares practical steps to help safety leaders stay ready, including:

• Monitoring local AQI via AirNow by work location (and re-checking throughout the shift)
• Identifying higher-risk employees and adjusting assignments and breaks accordingly
• Using simple, effective controls to reduce exposure (clean indoor air spaces, rotation, and planning)
• Reducing take-home exposure from particulates on clothing and gear
• Understanding when respiratory protection (like N95s) may be appropriate—and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration compliance considerations
• Staying aware of broader national fire activity and local alerts so you’re not making last-minute decisions

Proud to celebrate the 10th Anniversary Fairways for Hope Golf Outing benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - Philadelphia, hosted at the The Philadelphia Cricket Club. Special thanks to our Graham golfers: Kenneth L. Ewell, Chris Wetzel, Rob Sedlak, ARM, Kate Nauman, AINS, Carter Bumgardner, Izaak Park and Richard Piazza—and an extra thank you to Rob Sedlak for serving on the St. Jude committee, and to Kate Sedlak for volunteering as the event photographer. Labor shortages in construction are real, but they are not the only factor driving today’s workforce challenges. In a new Construction Business Outlook article, our own Lisa Bierer makes the case that many construction “staffing problems” are actually leadership alignment problems. When expectations, accountability, and communication vary from project to project (or supervisor to supervisor), the impact goes beyond morale and affects retention, productivity, quality, and safety.

The contractors who consistently attract and keep top talent often have one thing in common: aligned leadership and consistent standards. Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/4bmQQIn

Great connecting with fellow construction safety professionals at Mid-Atlantic Construction Safety Council's meeting last month. The session, “Rigging and the Importance of Having the Training,” featured standout presentations from David Spier (Safety Director, Herman Goldner Co.) and our own Jeff Spatz. They reinforced how consistent, role-specific training and disciplined planning help reduce risk and support safer lifts—takeaways safety leaders can put to work right away. Always appreciate the chance to learn and network with peers committed to raising the bar for jobsite safety.
