Financial independence means something different for everyone.

For some, it's having enough saved to stop working entirely. For others, it's having the flexibility to work because they want to, not because they have to.

There's no single definition, but there is a common thread: control over your time and your choices.

What would financial independence look like for you?

When it comes to money, misinformation can be just as harmful as inaction. Many people make decisions based on common myths that can limit long-term progress.

Here are a few to watch for:

Myth 1: You Need a Lot of Money to Start Investing
Waiting until you have a large amount saved can delay progress. Starting early, even with smaller contributions, allows time and consistency to work in your favor.

Myth 2: More Risk Always Means Better Returns
While taking on risk is part of investing, more is not always better. A thoughtful strategy balances growth potential with your comfort level and long-term goals.

Myth 3: I Can Save More Later to Catch Up
It is easy to push saving into the future, but time is one of your greatest advantages. The earlier you begin, the more opportunity your money has to grow.

Myth 4: I Do Not Need a Plan If Things Are Going Well
A strong financial plan is not just for tough times. It helps guide decisions during periods of growth and keeps you aligned when markets shift.

Myth 5: Financial Planning Is Only for Certain Income Levels
Financial planning can be valuable at every stage. Building good habits early often makes a meaningful difference over time.

Challenging these myths can help you make more informed, confident decisions about your financial future.

You may have seen headlines about Social Security's trust fund running low by 2032.

It's a real projection worth understanding, but it doesn't mean benefits disappear. Even without any changes from Congress, the program would still be able to pay a majority of scheduled benefits using ongoing payroll tax revenue.

Congress has made changes before to extend the program's solvency, and there's time for that to happen again.

In the meantime, it's worth reviewing how much of your retirement plan leans on Social Security, and whether it makes sense to diversify your income sources.

Becoming an empty nester can change more than your household routine. It can also change your budget.

With kids out of the house, some expenses may go down, while others may shift toward travel, home projects, retirement savings, or supporting adult children in new ways.

This can be a good time to reassess where your money is going and make sure your cash flow still supports your goals.

Markets move and over time your investment mix can drift away from your original strategy. Rebalancing helps bring your portfolio back in line with your intended risk level and long-term goals.

Here is what to keep in mind:

1. Check Your Asset Allocation
Review how your portfolio is currently distributed across your preferred asset classes. If one area has grown significantly, it may be time to adjust.

2. Maintain Your Risk Tolerance
A portfolio that becomes too heavily weighted in equities may expose you to more risk than you are comfortable with. Rebalancing helps keep your risk aligned with your plan.

3. Stay Disciplined, Not Emotional
Rebalancing your portfolio to its original target allocation helps keep your investment strategy aligned with your risk tolerance and diversification goals.

4. Consider Timing
Many investors review their portfolios quarterly, annually, or after significant market movements. The key is consistency.

5. Be Mindful of Taxes and Costs
Before making adjustments, consider potential tax implications and transaction fees, especially in taxable accounts.

If you would like help reviewing your portfolio and ensuring it stays aligned with your goals, consider scheduling a conversation to take a closer look.

A well-rounded estate plan is more than just a will. Here are some of the essential documents to be aware of:

• Will – A straightforward document that outlines how your assets are distributed after death
• Power of Attorney – Allows someone to make financial decisions on your behalf
• Healthcare Directive – Communicates your medical wishes
• Trust (if applicable) – A more flexible arrangement that allows you to manage assets while you’re still living

Taking time to understand and maintain these pieces can help reduce stress for your loved ones and keep your wishes front and center.

If you’d like help reviewing your current documents, consider scheduling a review.

When you think about retirement, what feels like the biggest unknown?

For some, it’s whether their savings will last. For others, it’s healthcare costs, taxes, or how market changes could affect their income.

A thoughtful retirement plan can help you look at these concerns together instead of treating each one separately.

If retirement is on your mind, let’s talk through what feels most important to you.

Do you know how Social Security survivor benefits work?

If a spouse passes away, the surviving spouse may be eligible to receive their spouse’s benefit instead of their own, whichever is higher, starting as early as age 60 (or earlier in certain cases).

It's a detail that's easy to overlook, but it can make a meaningful difference in a surviving spouse's retirement income.
