October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we want to help you stay one step ahead of scammers.

One scam we see often is bank impersonation, and we’re seeing more spoofing as well. Spoofing is when scammers disguise their phone number so the caller ID shows our bank’s name or number. You might get a call or text saying there’s suspicious activity on your account, and because it looks like it’s coming from us, it feels real… that’s exactly the point.

The scammer will usually ask you to “verify” your account by sharing your PIN, password, or a code sent to your phone. Sometimes they’ll even tell you to move your money to a safe account to protect it.

Please know that Peru Fed will never ask for your PIN, password, or security code, and we will never ask you to transfer money to keep it safe.

If you get a call or message like this, hang up and call us directly at the number on the back of your card. We’re always happy to double check for you.

Zelle® is a quick and easy way to send money right from our mobile banking app, but it’s also a favorite tool for scammers. 🚩

One trick going around is the “pay yourself” scam. Someone pretending to be from the bank says there’s fraud on your account and asks you to send money to yourself through Zelle to fix it. It’s a scam, and that money goes straight to them.

Peru Federal will never ask you to send money to yourself or anyone else to protect your account. If you get a call like this, hang up and call us directly.

We have received a few calls this morning from customers stating that they received a phone call from Peru Federal Savings Bank stating that their debit card had fraud and requested to verify their 10-digit card number.
