Can we just take a second to appreciate July?

August is coming in hot and I have a feeling it's going to be a good one. This month I'm going to be talking a lot about things worth knowing before fall hits. The stuff that matters before AEP sneaks up on us and suddenly everyone is making big decisions in a hurry.

Some people in your life are quietly navigating Medicare decisions without anyone in their corner.

They're Googling at midnight. Asking their neighbor who heard something from someone who maybe knew an agent once. Making decisions based on incomplete information because they don't know where to turn.

Tag the friend who just turned 65. Tag the parent who keEps saying they'll figure it out later. Tag the neighbor who mentioned their Medicare bill at the last block party.

Let them know there's someone they can call who will actually take the time to help them figure it out!

This happens more than you'd think. The grandkids come to visit, someone mentions Medicare over dinner, and suddenly you're the family expert whether you signed up for that role or not.

Or maybe it's a parent. A sibling. A neighbor who pulled you aside at church. Someone who needs help and doesn't know where to begin.

Here's what I tell people in that situation:

👨‍👩‍👧 Start with what they have. Do they have Medicare Part A and Part B? Do they know?
👨‍👩‍👧 Find out when they turn 65 or when their current coverage ends. Timing matters more than most people realize.
👨‍👩‍👧 Don't let them make decisions based on what worked for someone else. Everyone's situation is different.
👨‍👩‍👧 Connect them with an agent who will actually take the time to walk them through it.

That's what we're here for.
You don't have to have all the answers. You just have to know who to call!

Medicare has so many moving parts and finding a straight answer can feel like a full time job.

(I've read it. It's a lot. 😅)

Plan A. Plan B. Plan C which is actually called Medicare Advantage now. Supplement plans. Medicare Prescription Drug plans (also known as Part D). Enrollment windows that apparently matter very much and nobody tells you about until you've already missed one.

It is a lot. And you should not have to figure it out alone with a tab open to medicare.gov and a hold time of 45 minutes.

I know the difference between Plan G and Plan N. I know what IRMAA is and why it might affect you. I know which questions you don't even know to ask yet.

And I can explain all of it in plain English without making you feel like you should have known this already.

Because you shouldn't. Nobody teaches you this stuff. They just expect you to figure it out right when you have about a thousand other things going on.

So don't. Just call me instead. ☕

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I run into and I want to clear it up once and for all.

Most people think October is the only time they can do anything with their Medicare. And for a lot of situations that's true. But not all of them.

There are Special Enrollment Periods that allow you to make changes outside of AEP. Things like:

📋 Moving to a new area
📋 Losing other coverage you had
📋 Qualifying for extra help with costs
📋 Certain changes to your current plan
📋 Turning 65 and enrolling for the first time

If something has changed in your life this year, there's a good chance you don't have to wait until October to address it.

This is exactly the kind of thing worth a quick conversation about before you assume your hands are tied!

This is one of those things that feels obvious once you know it and completely blindsiding when you don't.

Your Medicare Advantage plan has a network. Doctors, hospitals, and facilities that have agreed to work with your plan at a set cost. That network exists where you live. When you travel, that network may not exist where you're going.

Here's what that means in real life:

🗺️ Routine care you get at home may be considered out of network somewhere else.
🗺️ Out of network care costs more. Sometimes significantly more.
🗺️ Emergency care is generally covered anywhere. But emergency and routine are very different things.
🗺️ Some plans have broader networks than others. Knowing which one you have matters a lot this time of year.

If you're not sure how your plan handles out of network care, that is worth a phone call before your next trip. Not after!

I love my job. Like genuinely love it. And one of the things I love most is when someone comes to me before something goes wrong instead of after.

So here are the questions I wish more people asked me before summer:

☀️ Does my coverage work the same way when I travel?
☀️ Can I get my prescriptions filled somewhere other than my regular pharmacy?
☀️ What do I do if I need care and my doctor isn't available?
☀️ Is there anything I should be looking at now before AEP gets here?
☀️ Am I actually getting the most out of the plan I'm on?

These are not complicated questions. But the answers can save you a lot of stress, a lot of confusion, and sometimes a lot of money.

Every year. Without fail. Someone calls me in a panic because they ran out of medication while they were traveling and couldn't get a refill where they were.

It is so stressful. And it is almost always preventable.

Here's the mistake: waiting until the last minute to think about refills before a trip.

Most Medicare prescription plans have rules about when you can refill. If you're leaving for two weeks and you only have five days of medication left, that's a problem. And it's a much bigger problem when you're three states away from your regular pharmacy.

Here's what to do before you go:

💊 Call your pharmacy and ask about vacation overrides. Many plans allow them!
💊 Check whether your pharmacy has locations where you're traveling.
💊 If you use mail order, update your delivery address or pick up before you leave.
💊 Pack more than you think you need. Always.

A little planning now saves a really stressful phone call later!
