Graduation season always makes me reflect on my own career journey and what I’d tell my younger self.
Back in high school, I truly had no idea what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I started college, but I wasn’t taking it seriously and felt like I was wasting my time. Over the years, I worked several jobs in IT, production, customer service, sales, and management until I finally found what felt right for me. I didn’t complete college until I was in my 30s, when our kids were in middle and high school.
Sometimes what you think you’ll enjoy doing for the rest of your life isn’t where you ultimately end up.
It’s okay not to have your future completely mapped out — as long as you get out there and try new things. Be open to new opportunities. Never be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Do what makes YOU happy. Meet different people. And don’t stress if your career takes unexpected turns.
It’s all part of the process, and it’s okay to stumble along the way — and yes, even fail.
