If you've got kids and you're planning for your financial future, chances are you've asked yourself the question: "Should I save for my child's college… or my own retirement?"

While both goals matter, retirement needs to come first. Why?

• You can borrow for college.
• You CANNOT borrow for retirement.
• Employer retirement matches are essentially free money. (Never leave that on the table!)
• Retirement savings aren't counted when determining your child's federal financial aid eligibility.

With that said, college savings shouldn't be put on hold indefinitely. Even modest monthly contributions to a 529 plan can grow significantly over time thanks to compound interest.

Last week PHCU staff and half of our Board attended the annual Legislative and Employee Appreciation dinner, sponsored by the Central IL Chapter of CU’s. There we heard from several of our local legislators regarding their support for credit unions in Springfield. PHCU is proud to be involved in advocacy efforts that benefit our membership! Shout out to our President, Nancy, for her work on the Central IL Chapter of CU’s board and her dedication to lobbying for common sense financial laws & regulations.
