To our friends in Central Illinois: If the weather forecast is correct, we could be in for some rough weather this afternoon and into tomorrow morning. If we get the predicted high winds and hail, it is very likely that we will see the "storm chasers" show up within hours. They will start going through neighborhoods knocking on doors in an attempt to convince people they have storm damage. In my 50+ years of the insurance business I have never seen a single legitimate roofer/contractor that needs to go door-to-door looking for business. If you get the storm chasers show up at your place, send them packing. They are scammers! Do not sign ANYTHING with them, do not let them on your roof, do not engage their services. If you think you have actual storm damage, call one of the long-established local roofers/contractors. Better yet call your insurance agent and get advice before you start a claim. Please share this post.

As we watch our neighbors to the west in Western Iowa and East SD deal with torrential rains and the subsequent flooding, please remember damage to commercial buildings, business contents, personal homes, and personal property is not covered by standard insurance policies. Property owners need actual "Flood Insurance" policies to be covered for these catastrophic claims. Most people that are away from actual bodies of water (lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, shorelines) don't think they need, or can get, flood insurance. This is not true. Most properties in the US can secure flood insurance, but property owners need to apply for flood insurance to be covered. Call your insurance agents today and ask if you are covered when there sudden, heavy rain storms.

As a veteran of the insurance business now for the past 49 years, I have never seen such a mess in the insurance marketplace. Insurance companies are raising rates, restricting new business, changing existing policies to reduce coverage, and making life difficult for insurance consumers. I attempt everyday to provide good advice to my policyholders and members of the public about how to be proactive in working through insurance issues. One bit of advise I provide regularly is that when you believe you might have a claim, contact your insurance agent, NOT your insurance company. Consult with your agent if the situation you have warrants submitting a claim to the insurance company. I hear from so, so many people that have been dropped by their insurance company of have seen huge rate increases because they have overused their policies for minor claims. Let your agent help you decide which claims are prudent to submit. Many insurance companies are now taking drastic action against policies that have minor claims and even "zero paid" claims, towing, glass, windshield claims, and claims for not-at-fault car accidents. I personally believe this is unwarranted, but apparently no one at the insurance companies is asking for, or wants, my thoughts.

A quick note to those considering buying a new house in 2024. Before making the offer on the new place, call your insurance agent and find out if the house will qualify for a new policy and what the price would be. Over the past few months, we have seen insurance companies restricting their underwriting appetites for new business and many homes that would have qualified for preferred pricing just a few months ago, may now not qualify based on things like age of roofs or other characteristics the insurance companies are trying to avoid. I've seen clients that make an offer, have the offer accepted, and then start the process of looking for new Homeowners Insurance only to discover the new policy is difficult to obtain or much more expensive than they anticipated. A little insurance research goes a long way.

In 48 years of being a professional in the the insurance business, I've never seen a time when the business is such a mess! Insurance companies are withdrawing from markets all over the country, raising rates at an alarming pace, restricting coverage, raising deductibles, and finding obscure reasons to discontinued existing policies. I believe that this trend will continue well into 2024 and that insurance consumers will wrestle with the the "new insurance world". If you get notices from your insurance company about rate increases or other changes, know that you're not alone. Also, if you tend to be regularly late by a few days on paying premiums, this is an activity which insurance companies may now use to cancel your policy that may be locked into older, less expensive rates. Hang on! It's going to be a bumpy ride for the foreseeable future.

The recent wind and hail storms have caused lots of damage and even more confusion, If you believe you may have damage to your home or business, call a local, well-established, reputable roofer or contractor. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT fall prey to the door-to-door roofing companies or public adjustors that may knock on your door and tell you that you have damage and that they will inspect on your behalf. They are scam artists!!! They will have you sign something under the premise that your signature grants them permission to inspect your roof. What you're actually signing is a legally binding contract that commits you to paying them a substantial fee and/or committing you to having to use a specific contractor (a contractor connected to their firm) to do the work. Many of our clients have been hoodwinked into this common scam. Reputable roofing companies and contractor never solicit business by randomly knocking on doors. Never!

Auto thefts claims continue to rise. In just the first two months of 2023, Peoria County has seen 220 auto thefts. Some suggestions for helping keep your car safe; a.) NEVER leave your keys or key fob in the car, even if the car is parked in your garage, b.) always lock your car no matter where you park it (even in your own driveway, c.) don't leave valuables in the car where they are visible, d.) park in well-lit areas. Insurance policies that include comprehensive coverage will pay for car thefts and the damage from attempted theft, but the policyholder still has their deductible and, after repair, the car may not be in pre-theft condition
