Back to School time!

Common question I get asked for college kids. Do I need to get renters insurance? I recommend….yes! Here are some things to consider.

1) Personal property coverage extends from parents’ home policy to kids as long as they are in on-campus housing and a full-time student.

2) “Watch this” mentality in some kids leads to stupid stuff happening at college. Personal liability may or may not extend from parents’ home policy depending on the carrier. I always recommend renters insurance in the kid’s name to cover the ($300,000) personal liability exposure.

3) When kid moves to off-campus housing, the parents’ home policy will not extend to off-campus housing.

4) Computer coverage under renters insurance is not great. If you want coverage for a computer, I recommend scheduling it on renters policy to get purchase price coverage and no deductible.

This is a home insurance claims public service announcement:

If you turn in a home claim and receive payment to repair or replace damage to your home, the expectation from the insurance carrier is that you repair or replace that claim damage.

I have had a few claimants recently explain they have not repaired or replaced the damage and they do not intend to repair or replace the damage. More and more, insurance companies are requesting verification that previous claim damage is fixed before they will offer a home renewal. On top of that, it is almost impossible to find a different insurance carrier who will accept previous damage as new business. - Chad Kleine

We are never a fan of rate increases, but State Farm is the largest insurance carrier in the United States holding a significant part of the insurance market share. When they take a rate increase customers finally inderstand we are not making this stuff up.

Do tou want to know what a 28% increase really means for customers? When they save the average customer
Will go up 28%, that means customers will see rate increases probably from 20-70%. The 20-40% customers will have newer homes with roofs under 10 years old, no claims, and a good or excellent insurance score. 40-70% customers will have older homes with roofs older than 10 years, a claim or two within the last five years, and/or an average to marginal insurance score.

I have not provided an update in a while. The merger of Nixon Insurance Agency to Envision Insurance Group is complete. Chad Kleine and Victoria Coats have moved into Envision’s Peoria office on Pioneer Parkway. Nick Gunn has moved into Envision’s Morton office on Main St.

Effective at the end of 2023, Nixon Insurance Agency has joined the Envision Insurance Group.

As an agency, we have struggled with staffing over the last few years which has made it difficult to remain consistent in our service to you. After much thought and consideration, the decision was made to join a larger, local independent agency.
