Tom Costello's career as a quant started in the early 90’s at the JP Morgan Global Headquarters. He worked on the exotic swaps and derivatives desk as part of their institutional trading team. There he designed pricing models, SPV’s and custom hedging solutions for a variety of instruments and derived products. After some time at JP Morgan and Deutschebank, his first work building trading models came a few years later when he reported to Piotre Karazinsky, part of the Nobel Prize winning team that designed the Black-Karazinsky swaption model, now in common and widespread use throughout the finance industry.
Moving to the buy side he spent three years at Louis Bacon’s legendary hedge fund Moore Capital Management, where he was head of a quantitative research team.
He later took that same trading system to Tudor Investments where it was vested at a total of $100 million. He traded it for a total of seven years of continuous profitability – never producing a down year – an exceptionally long lifecycle time for a single trading strategy.
After his time at Tudor, he was recruited as Head of Equity Trading at Telluride Asset Management – a 1 billion bollar AUM hedge fund that was focused exclusively on quantitative investment.
Leaning mostly on that experience and his total of 30 years in institutional finance, he’s recently published his first book, “The Front Office”, a Hedge Fund guide for Day Traders, Retail, and Aspiring Quants.
