The US government has decided to end the Medicare Part D subsidy program, which was set to expire at the end of 2026. This decision was made by the Trump administration, which claimed that the program benefited corporate insurance companies more than the beneficiaries. The end of the subsidy program will result in higher prescription costs and increased premiums for about half of recipients, with some facing increases of up to $20 a month. The changes are anticipated to happen in 2027, and enrollees will find out the new monthly cost later that fall. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) expects to release details on costs in mid- to late-September 2026.
