This Memorial Day, I am thinking of my daddy, my uncles, my grandfathers, cousins, and my great-grandfathers — men and women who served in the Navy, the Army, and the Marines.
They did not lose their lives in combat, but they gave something profound all the same.
They gave their time, their energy, and years they could have spent building their own dreams in service of their country they loved but who didn't always love them.
They left behind families who loved them, communities that shaped them, and futures they had imagined for themselves — and they did it to fight for freedom and out of love for this country and for every person in it.
