The Oregon Building Codes Division (BCD) is warning Oregonians of a phishing scam that is targeting people who are awaiting approval for a project from their local building or planning department.

In this scam, someone claiming to be from the local building or planning department emails a possible victim to get them to wire money. The scammer uses information about the person and their project to claim their application has been approved. The scammer tells the person that they must pay the invoice using a wire transfer. The scammer also claims that “all correspondence must be conducted by email to ensure transparency and accurate record-keeping for auditing purposes.”

Your local building or planning department will not request that you send money to them through wire transfer. BCD recommends that you check to make sure your correspondence is from the correct person and jurisdiction. Local building and planning departments are based in either your city or county. If someone claims to be from those departments, go to the official city or county website and find the correct contact information to verify if what you received is legitimate. View a list of local building departments at https://oregon.gov/bcd/jurisdictions.

It’s Building Safety Month and the Building Codes Division wants to remind you to use electrical cords safely. Overloaded outlets and undersized extension cords are easily overlooked and can put you at risk of a fire or electrocution.

Electrical cords and power strips have a rated load capacity; be sure the total amount of energy used by all devices does not exceed that capacity. Power consumption information for most appliances can be found on the device label or a tag on the power cord.

Take care to protect appliance cords from physical damage such as foot traffic, furniture, pets, swinging doors, and other causes. Extension cords should not be used permanently and should be inspected before each use. Do not plug multiple power strips together – commonly known as “daisy-chaining.”

It’s Financial Literacy Month, and strong money management is key to financial resilience and stability. A solid plan can help you manage everyday expenses, prepare for the unexpected, and reduce financial stress.

Focus on these basics of money management:
• Create a written budget that outlines your expected income and expenses
• Pay yourself first by prioritizing saving and investing
• Build an emergency fund gradually over time
• Prioritize needs before wants and look for opportunities to save
• Track where your money goes every month
• Review and adjust your budget as your life and goals change

Good money management gives you more control today and confidence about tomorrow. Learn more about budgeting at https://dfr.oregon.gov/financial/manage/Pages/budget.aspx.

April is Financial Literacy Month. Financial literacy isn’t about being wealthy – it’s about having the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions, protect yourself from fraud, and build resilience during times of uncertainty. Access to clear, trustworthy financial education resources is essential for making sound decisions. The Oregon Division of Financial Regulation’s consumer advocacy team and consumer guides are resources you can trust. For more information, visit dfr.oregon.gov.

April is Financial Literacy Month and understanding credit can open doors. Your credit affects more than just your ability to get a loan and interest rates. It can influence housing options, insurance rates, and even some job opportunities. The good news is that small, consistent habits make a big difference.

Here are a few credit tips:
• Pay bills on time – even the minimum counts.
• Keep credit card balances as low as possible – ideally paying them off in full every month.
• Check your credit report regularly for errors by visiting annualcreditreport.com.
• Save for large purchases so you don’t have to borrow as much.
• Be cautious about opening new credit accounts you don’t need.

Building and protecting your credit takes hard work, but every positive step strengthens your financial future. Learn more about credit at https://dfr.oregon.gov/financial/loans/personal/Pages/why-credit-matters.aspx.
