Lisa's parents are both 89. They want to die at home, surrounded by family, not in a facility.

But Bert and Amelia need round-the-clock care. And the median cost of that kind of care at home is $80,080 a year.

Medicare won't touch most of it.

Here's the part almost nobody knows until they're living it: Medicare pays generously for hospice, once a doctor says someone has six months or less to live.

But for the years of care leading up to that?

The bathing, the meals, the supervision, the help just getting through the day? Medicare pays almost nothing.

Families are left to spend down savings, take out reverse mortgages, or simply do it themselves until they burn out.

If you don't have a plan for this stage of life, you don't have a retirement plan. You have half of one.

The good news: there are ways to plan for this now, before you need it, so the decision isn't made for you in a crisis.

Let's talk about what your options actually are.

If something happens to you and you can't care for yourself, who shows up?

For a lot of people, the answer is "my kids will figure it out."

But what about the retirees who don't have kids to lean on?

Or whose kids live states away, or have their own families to take care of?

A recent look at retirement planning for child-free adults raised a question that honestly applies to almost everyone: who is your backup plan?

Only about 15% of child-free retirees have long-term care insurance.

Fewer than 20% even have a will.

Not because they don't care, but because nobody sat them down and walked through what happens if they need help and there's no built-in support system.

Here's the truth: even if you do have kids, you don't want to be the reason they have to put their life on hold.
Most of my clients tell me the same thing: they don't want to be a burden.

A long-term care plan isn't about assuming the worst. It's about making sure that if the day comes, you have real options instead of relying on hope.

Let's put a plan in place while you still have every choice available to you.

Worth flagging for anyone on Medicare Advantage, or with a parent who is.

Humana is discontinuing Medicare Advantage plans covering roughly 600,000 members for 2027, with federally required non-renewal notices dated October 2.

What's less publicized: a plan non-renewal triggers a guaranteed-issue right to purchase Medigap, without medical underwriting, a right that's normally unavailable once someone has been enrolled in Medicare for a while.

Members who simply accept a replacement Advantage plan without comparing it against this option may be leaving real value on the table.

If you receive one of these letters this fall, it's worth a conversation before you decide.

Why Does My Prescription Cost So Much? Decoding Drug Tiers and Coverage Rules

Opening a pharmacy receipt and seeing a number far higher than expected is one of the most common frustrations in health care today. Nearly 68% of Americans take at least one prescription medication daily, and rising drug costs mean many are paying more than they realize simply because they do not u...

Dental anxiety is more common than people admit. And it does more damage than the fear itself.
When someone avoids the dentist because they're scared of the chair, the drill, or just bad memories, the problem underneath doesn't go away.

It gets worse.

A small cavity turns into a root canal.

A little gum irritation turns into something that needs real treatment.

What could've been a quick, affordable fix becomes a bigger, more expensive, more painful one.

The hardest part isn't the treatment.

It's the years of avoidance that let a small problem turn into a big one.

If fear or cost has kept you or someone you love away from the dentist, the first step isn't forcing yourself into a chair.

It's finding out what coverage you actually have so cost stops being the excuse.

There's a pattern showing up in the data that should worry anyone on a Medicare Advantage plan: people with greater health needs are leaving their MA plans at higher rates than healthier enrollees.

Think about what that means.

People don't typically leave a plan when they're healthy and everything's easy.

They leave after they get sick, need real care, and find out the plan wasn't built to serve them the way they expected.

By then, they've already gone through a health event without the coverage they thought they had.

The government is projected to overpay Medicare Advantage plans by roughly $1 trillion over the next decade, in part because plans are structured to look good on paper for healthy enrollees while quietly falling short for people who actually need care.

The time to find out if your plan will be there for you is before you get sick, not after.

If it's been more than a year since someone actually reviewed your Medicare Advantage plan against your real health needs, that review is overdue.

Medicare's trust fund is set to run out. Here's what that actually means for you.

The Washington Post just laid it out in stark terms: the Medicare hospital trust fund is projected to run dry in 2033. Social Security's main trust fund goes first, in 2032. If Congress does nothing between now and then, the automatic result is roughly a 10% cut to Medicare and a 25% cut to Social Security benefits.

That's not a "maybe." That's what current law requires if nothing changes.

If you're already retired or getting close, that's not an abstract budget headline. That's your income and your healthcare coverage.

Here's the real question: does your current plan account for the possibility of reduced benefits, rising out-of-pocket costs, and a Medicare system under more financial strain every year? Most people's plans don't, because they were built years ago and never updated.

I help people stress-test their Medicare and retirement income plan against exactly this kind of scenario, so a headline like this doesn't turn into a crisis for your household.
