Before cell phones, GPS, and digital dispatch systems, trains had a dangerous problem:
They couldn’t easily communicate while moving.
That’s where Granville T. Woods changed history.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1856, Woods became one of the most brilliant Black inventors of the 19th century. He taught himself engineering, worked on railroads, studied electricity, and built a career during a time when Black genius was often ignored, stolen, or underestimated.
His most famous invention was the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph — a system that allowed moving trains to communicate with stations and with each other.
In simple terms?
He helped make train travel safer.
His work reduced the risk of collisions and improved how railroads operated. That invention was so valuable that major companies took notice — and Woods had to fight to protect his patents.
He earned more than 50 patents in his lifetime, with inventions connected to railroads, electricity, telegraphs, and transportation.
People called him the “Black Edison,” but Granville T. Woods was not a copy of anyone.
He was Granville T. Woods.
A self-taught inventor.
A problem solver.
A man whose mind helped move America forward — literally.
