This May, we’re taking time to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month by sharing an important distinction our team at Barry Insurance Group believes everyone should understand: mental health and mental health conditions are not the same.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
💚 Mental health is something we all have. It includes your emotional, psychological, and social well-being and influences how you handle stress, make decisions, and navigate daily life.
💚 Mental health conditions are diagnosable disorders such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD. More than half of people will experience a mental health diagnosis at some point.
💚 You can have a mental health condition and still experience good mental health through treatment, support, and consistent self-care.
💚 Poor mental health doesn’t always equal a mental illness. Stress, grief, burnout, and major life changes can impact well-being without meeting diagnostic criteria.
💚 Small daily habits matter. Journaling, movement, breathing exercises, and connecting with loved ones can all support better mental health.
💚 Professional care is for everyone. Therapy and counseling can be helpful whether or not you have a diagnosed condition.
As an insurance agency focused on protecting your well-being, we want to remind you that help is available and you’re never alone. If you need support, consider speaking with a qualified health care professional.
