As we observe Mental Health Awareness Month, FDM wants to remind our members that you don't have to carry the load alone. Changing the culture starts with one conversation and knowing where to turn when someone in the house is struggling.

We've compiled crisis hotlines, peer support programs, and treatment resources specifically for first responders in our May newsletter—complete with direct links and contact info.

Heading to Syracuse for the NYSAFC Annual Conference & Business Meeting? So are we!

FDM is proud to co-sponsor this year’s event at The Oncenter from June 10–13. Whether you’re there for the training, the exhibits, or the networking, we’d love to see you.

Stop by Booths 1026 & 1028 to meet the team, ask questions about your coverage, or just talk shop about the New York fire service.

See you in Syracuse!

Firefighters see things most people never will. Those experiences don't just disappear when the tone stops ringing.

Roughly 20% of firefighters and paramedics will meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress at some point in their careers. Whether it's the sudden impact of a bad call or the slow burn of burnout, these are real occupational hazards—just like smoke inhalation or cardiac stress.

Recognizing when the weight is getting too heavy isn't a weakness. It's situational awareness.

Take care of our own with the same urgency we use to take care of the public.

The physical demands of the fire service don’t get easier with time. Fitness isn't about passing a CPAT—it’s about lifting a ladder without wrecking your back and staying operational for the long haul.

Safety Stand Down runs June 14–20. This year’s theme: "Fit to Serve and Fit for Life." Injury prevention, practical fitness, and wellness for every rank.

Check out the resources and start planning your department’s stand down at safetystanddown.org.

FDM had a great time in Lake George for the CAFDA Annual Conference.

There’s real value in getting in the room with the people managing fire districts every day — sharing ideas, discussing challenges, and having the kinds of conversations that move the work forward.

Thank you to the organizers and attendees for a productive conference. We’re already looking forward to next year.

FDM was honored to sponsor the Believe 31 “Kicking Fire Service Cancer” event.

We are proud to stand behind an organization dedicated to supporting New York’s fire service members through their toughest battles.

As Believe 31 shared: “Through [FDM’s] generosity, we are able to provide resources, financial assistance, and hope to those who need it most. Together, we continue to Ignite Hope and stand behind our fire service community.”

FDM’s 2026 Board Election is complete. Thank you to every policyholder who attended in Albany or submitted a proxy ballot.

As a mutual company, FDM is shaped by the people it serves. Your participation helps keep this organization strong, stable, and focused on New York’s fire service.

Congratulations to Michael Geoghan, Michael White, and Ralph Raymond on their reelections, and to our Board Officers on continuing in their leadership roles.

Managing stress isn't a luxury; it’s a critical component of situational awareness. High stress leads to fatigue, and fatigue leads to preventable injuries.

Try box breathing after a heavy call to reset your heart rate, and don't sleep on peer support. Using your department’s resources isn't a weakness; it’s maintenance for the job.

You left family dinner for a structure fire. Slept in your gear because mutual aid needed coverage. Missed your kid's game to run a med call.

The volunteer fire service runs on people who show up when it costs them something.

FDM is proud to protect the people who protect communities across New York.

Snow's gone. Dry debris is everywhere. Wildfire risk is up — and the NYS spring burn ban is in effect through May 14.

Fewer brush fires this season means fewer high-risk responses for your crews.

💡 District tip: Post it on your station marquee and your socials. Your community trusts your local voice more than a state agency's website.
