A semantic layer can make a metric consistent. A data catalog can make the asset understandable and governed.
The misconception is assuming either one, on its own, gives an AI agent everything it needs to trust the answer.
Ask an agent for current ARR, and the calculation is only part of the question. It may also need to know which definition is approved, which source is canonical and fresh, whether it is certified, where the number came from, what quality warnings exist, and whether the requester is allowed to see it.
No single layer has to solve the entire context problem.
For Analytical AI, the more useful question isn’t what the architecture is called. It’s whether business meaning, provenance, source authority, quality, policy, and usage context come together in the answer path when the agent needs them.
Metric consistency matters. Catalog coverage matters. Trust depends on bringing the right signals together.
