Nationally, affordable metros have dropped 40% over the past decade, from 354 in 2014 to 212 in 2025, according to real estate analytics firm Cotality. Ultra-affordable markets nearly disappeared, with only four remaining in 2025, down from 41.
Ten metros now stand out for the lowest total housing costs, including mortgage, taxes, insurance, and PMI:
