Is Farm Insurance Necessary?
One question we hear often is, "Do I really need farm insurance?" The honest answer is not everyone does.
If you are financially secure enough to replace a barn, equipment, livestock, or other property out of pocket after a major loss, then you may be in a position to accept that risk yourself.
For many farm owners, however, a barn fire, storm damage, equipment loss, or liability claim could create a significant financial hardship. That's where farm insurance comes in. It's not a scam, and it's not designed to pay for things that never happen. It's there to help protect people from losses they simply can't afford to absorb on their own.
It's also important to understand that farm insurance is very different from auto insurance. In Maryland, auto insurance is required by law if you want to drive on public roads. Farm insurance is generally not legally required, but it can be an important financial tool for protecting your investment and livelihood.
If you have a loan on a barn, tractor, or other equipment, your lender will likely require insurance. That's because both you and the lender have a financial interest in that property, and neither party is in a position to simply write off the loss if something happens.
Insurance isn't for everyone. It's for people who can't afford to take the risk alone.
