Insurance Myths About Fallen Trees (That Cost People Money) 🌳💥

Let’s clear up one of the biggest homeowner mix-ups we hear all the time:

Myth: “If my neighbor’s tree falls on my house, their insurance has to pay.”
Reality: In most cases, your homeowners insurance covers the damage to your home (and structures), even if the tree came from next door. You file the claim, pay your deductible, and your policy handles the repairs (up to your limits).

Myth: “If my tree falls on my neighbor’s property, I automatically have to pay for everything.”
Reality: Usually their insurance covers the damage to their house/fence/garage. Your policy typically only gets involved if you were negligent — like ignoring a clearly dead, rotting, or hazardous tree that you knew (or should have known) was a problem.

Myth: “Insurance will always pay to remove the tree, even if it didn’t hit anything.”
Reality: If the tree just falls in the yard and doesn’t damage a covered structure, debris removal is often not covered. (Some policies may help if it’s blocking a driveway, but don’t count on it.)

Quick takeaway:
Healthy tree + storm/wind = usually the damaged property owner’s insurance.
Neglected/dead tree you ignored = possible liability shift.
