Currently, I serve as the Training Manager for our agency, a role I've proudly held for 5 years. In this capacity, I've had the privilege of contributing to the professional development of my fellow officers. One of my proudest accomplishments has been the implementation and management of a robust financial wellness program that serves 140 city employees. Recently at a State Wide Law Enforcement Conference I asked:

"How does your agency currently address financial wellness for employees?"

The results were telling.

• 38% said there is little to no discussion about money and officers are left to figure it out on their own.

• 50% said support is limited to an EAP, an occasional retirement presentation, or a flyer from HR.

• Only 13% reported having an ongoing financial wellness program with education, support, and leadership buy-in.

Financial stress is one of the most common stressors first responders face, yet it remains one of the least talked about.

If we care about officer wellness, retention, performance, and family health, financial wellness needs a seat at the table.

Financial stress impacts more than bank accounts.
It affects sleep, anxiety levels, decision-making, relationships, and ultimately officer safety.

Grateful for the opportunity to present during the ILETSB Executive Institute May 7 statewide webinar alongside leaders from the Chicago Police Department to discuss the real connection between financial wellness and mental wellness in law enforcement.

These are conversations our profession needs more of.

Today is a reminder that freedom came at a cost.

The backyard cookouts, cold beers, hot dogs, family time, and the ability to gather freely with the people we love — none of it exists without the sacrifice of those who never made it home.

This Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the fallen heroes who gave everything for this country. Their sacrifice is the reason we get to enjoy these moments together.

That’s not always an income issue. Most of the time it’s habits, lack of margin, stress spending, or never having a real plan in place.

The good news? Habits can change. And when habits change, stress starts changing too.

National Police Week hits different when you’ve spent almost 20 years in this profession.

This week is about remembrance, reflection, and honor. We remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. We honor the families who continue carrying that loss every day. And we reflect on the privilege and responsibility that comes with serving our communities.

This career will test you in ways most people will never fully understand. But it also builds lifelong bonds, purpose, resilience, and perspective.

I’m grateful for every officer, dispatcher, firefighter, medic, and first responder still answering the call today. Stay safe and never forget those we’ve lost.

This morning I had the opportunity to lead a 3-hour webinar on financial wellness during uncertain times for law enforcement professionals from across the state of Illinois.

Big thank you to the ILETSB Executive Institute for sponsoring the session and recognizing that financial wellness is part of officer wellness. These conversations matter. Financial stress impacts focus, sleep, relationships, performance, and long-term health — both on and off the job.

57% said no debt.
Only 17% said just having a plan.

That tells you everything.

People don’t just want more money — they want clarity, direction, and control.
