CONSUMER ALERT: Invasive Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter Found on Plants Shipped to California Costco Stores.

The Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner is urgently asking residents to take immediate action after invasive glassy-winged sharpshooters were detected on plant shipments delivered to Costco stores throughout California.

Residents who purchased grapevines or citrus plants from any Costco store since April 21, 2026, are strongly urged to follow the instructions below immediately to help prevent the spread of this destructive agricultural pest:

๐Ÿ‡FOR GRAPEVINES (This does not include grapes purchased at Costco)
Place two garbage bags over plants and secure them tightly. Then, contact your county agricultural commissioner.

๐ŸŠFOR CITRUS PLANTS (This does not include citrus fruit purchased at Costco)
Contact the Agriculture Department immediately to schedule an inspection.

๐ŸšซDo not return, transport, relocate, share, or give away plants, and do not place plants in trash bins or compost containers.

๐Ÿ“žContact the Shasta County Agriculture Department at
(530) 224-4949 or by email at [email protected] to schedule pickup of grapevines and/or inspection of citrus plants and receive guidance on preventing further spread of the glassy-winged sharpshooter.

โ€œGlassy-winged sharpshooters pose a serious threat to vineyards, agriculture, and backyard plants throughout Shasta County and nearby areas,โ€ said John Ingram, Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner. โ€œThese insects spread the bacterium called Xylella fastidiosa that causes Pierceโ€™s disease, which can kill grapevines and severely damage vineyards. We need the communityโ€™s help to prevent the spread. If you recently purchased grapevines or citrus plants from Costco, please contact the Agriculture Department immediately so we can safely contain and eliminate this threat.โ€

UC Berkeley and UC Cooperative Extension are asking ranchers, producers, and other interested Californians to take part in an anonymous survey to help guide future improvements to the current compensation program.

The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete, and all responses will only be shared in aggregate form with CDFW and the public.

Congratulations to Genevieve Atwell, West Valley FFA- winner of the 2026 California FFA Agriscience Fair! ๐ŸŽ‰ An incredible achievement in a record-breaking year with 355 projects submitted and 54 winners recognized. ๐Ÿ’›California FFA Announces State Agriscience Fair Winners at the 98th State FFA Leadership Conference ๐Ÿ’›

California FFA is proud to announce the winners of the 2026 Agriscience Fair. Awardees were recognized on stage at the recent 98th Annual California FFA State Leadership Conference held from March 21 to 24 in Ontario, Calif.

The California FFA Agriscience Fair is open to 7th-12th grade students enrolled in agriculture courses. The competition features six categories: Food Products and Processing Systems; Environmental Services/Natural Resource Systems; Animal Systems; Plant Systems; Power, Structural and Technical Systems; and Social Systems.

Students compete individually or in teams under one of these categories, using scientific methods to address challenges within the agricultural, food, and natural resource industries. Participants competing in the agriscience fair must submit a research paper, which is evaluated at the regional level. The top projects move on to the state competition, where they are displayed by poster at the agriscience exhibit at the conferenceโ€™s career expo. Finalists are then selected by an esteemed panel of judges working in education and the agriculture industry.

This year, California FFA is proud to have had a record-breaking 355 projects submitted. The contest provides an outstanding platform for students to showcase their innovative projects and research, all while gaining real-world, hands-on experience in agriculture.

As the agriculture industry rises to the challenge of feeding and clothing a growing global population, scientists and innovators are playing a critical role in advancing modern agricultural production. The agriscience fair serves as a vital tool to prepare and equip FFA members to become the innovators of tomorrow.

Congratulations to this yearโ€™s 54 state winners (attached) and the following outstanding projects listed below:
