The City of Palm Springs’ “Shelter in Place” ordinance is mirroring that of San Francisco. All non-essential businesses are to close beginning Wednesday, March 18, starting at 7:00 AM. The City of Palm Springs will recommend reopening or extending the ordinance on April 2.

During this critical and stressful time, Compass Rose Financial Planning will be working from home for at least the next two weeks. We will be constantly monitoring our business phone voicemail and email, continuing to maintain our full level of support to our existing clients, as well as remain available to any new potential clients who are seeking our services. Our business has full functionality at home, despite not occupying our office space.

In addition to working from home, we are encouraging our existing clients to meet with us via conference call and internet desktop sharing. We hope everyone will remain calm and healthy during this extremely stressful time.

Desert Business Association Member Spotlight: Bob Machado, 2019 DBA Business of the Year - Compass Rose Financial Planning

DBA Member Spotlight: Bob Machado, of DBA Business of the Year Compass Rose Financial Planning

It was his own run-in with bad financial advice that prompted Bob Machado, of Compass Rose Financial Planning, to switch careers and become a Certified Financial Planner.

“A devastating financial setback nearly cost us our home due to some poor advice,” Machado said. “This experience not only crystallized a need for me to understand my own financial situation, but also motivated me to acquire the tools to help other people.”

That motivation has led Compass Rose to a lot of success—including being named the DBA 2019 Business of the Year. Compass Rose will be honored at the 2019 Business and Community Awards Dinner at the Saguaro on Monday, May 20.

Compass Rose is an independent fee-only financial planning firm that’s been providing services in the Coachella Valley for 12 years. Clients only pay for analyzing their specific financial situations, formulating and being educated about recommendations, and helping them implement changes. Compass Rose is a Registered Financial Advisor with the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA).

“I firmly believe that my clients should be an active participant, so that they understand why adjustments are implemented, not ‘because Bob told me to,’” he said.
Bob and his husband Michael moved to Rancho Mirage in February 2007 after spending 30 years in San Francisco. Tired of the cold, they made the trek down to the desert and have been here ever since.

Bob earned both his master’s degree in financial planning and an MBA from Golden Gate University and obtained his bachelor’s from West Point. He served in the Army for 7 years as an Infantry Captain.

Compass Rose FP has been an active member of the Desert Business Association; in fact, Bob served as the treasurer on the DBA’s board for more than five years.
“DBA has provided me the opportunity to get valley-wide exposure for me and my company. … It is meeting members again and again, over dozens of mixers, that builds that bond and trust, that builds our business community.”

Bob and Michael intend to retire in the next five years or so—but Compass Rose isn’t going anywhere, and Bob is making sure that his succession plan keeps the company’s values intact.

“I want to make sure that my firm is only sold to another NAPFA Fee-Only planner.”

We have been receiving many client inquiries concerning our recommended holdings in bonds. Our general answer is don't panic; bonds are not meant to be the earnings generator in your portfolio. They are meant to provide stability and diversification and provide some sort of insurance for your portfolio in a severely down market.

Example: When stocks went down from 2007 to 2009 by -50.8%, Bonds went up by 6.2%, during the same time. This is a differential of 57%. (Resource: Morningstar.com) Having the proper balance of bonds in your portfolio at that time, would have basically saved your portfolio a bunch.

Bill Gross, the founder of PIMCO, the largest bond fund in the world, gives his perspective: "A significant portion of an institutional or individual's portfolio will always require bonds."

Don't run from bonds, but start thinking differently about how much bond risk to keep in your portfolio.
