Red flags I notice in interviews with loan originators

Not every red flag is obvious.

Most of the time, it’s not what someone says... it’s how they think.

After years of interviewing loan originators, here are the patterns I pay attention to.

1. No clear process

If someone can’t walk me through how they handle a deal, from pre-approval to closing, that’s a problem.

Strong loan officers don’t wing it.
They operate with structure.

2. Over-reliance on rates

If your main value proposition is “I have great rates,” you’re replaceable.

Rates change.
Relationships and ex*****on don’t.

3. Blaming external factors

“The market is tough.”
“Agents aren’t loyal.”
“Leads are bad.”

Top producers take ownership.

They adjust.
They don’t deflect.

4. Transactional mindset

If everything is about the next deal, there’s no long-term strategy.
The best loan officers build partnerships... not one-off transactions.

5. Lack of curiosity

The strongest candidates ask thoughtful questions.

About process.
About support.
About growth.

If you’re not asking, you’re not thinking long-term.
