High achievers don’t fall because they’re unprepared - they fall because they trusted the wrong parachute.

The Air Force joke of “Why jump out of a perfectly good plane?” missed the point of the activity.

But anyone responsible for a landing knows better.

The plane isn’t the point.
The landing is.

We trained for many possibilities - including the ones that felt unnecessary.

Especially the least obvious ones.

Because the soft landing you expect can change instantly when there’s a tree in the way.

In reality, we have a lot more to prepare for than jumping out of a perfectly good plane.

Careers shift quickly.
Contracts change without warning.
And the next chapter doesn’t always arrive on your schedule.

I’ve met many professionals who spent decades delivering excellence - only to realize no one prepared them for what happens after the spotlight moves on.

Even with all the preparation in the world, you can’t predict everything.

But you can put a solid structure in place so you’re not caught off guard at 10,000 feet.

That’s the work I do now:

You’re not stepping out of something. You’re stepping into something.

The question is… what are you stepping into?

For some, that phrase might bring to mind stepping into something unpleasant - we’ve all been there.

But in your life’s direction, it can mean the complete opposite.

Every ending is an opening. Every transition is an invitation.

Recently, a respected retired anchor I interviewed for my book, Art Holliday, said: “You don’t want to retire from something. You want to retire to something.”

That hit me. Because this isn’t just about retirement.

It’s about reinvention, direction, and purpose, in any season.

Lately, my own career has shifted in unexpected ways from financial strategist and artist to author and booking agent for a very talented celebrity.

Each step forward has taught me the same lesson:
We don’t move forward by walking away.
We move forward by stepping into what’s next with strategy and courage.
