Aurora Sky Castner’s story is one of resilience and hope. Born in the Galveston County Jail, she was taken home and raised by her single father after her mother, who delivered her behind bars, did not remain in her life,Undeterred by her start, Castner excelled academically, graduating third in her class at Conroe High School and earning a full scholarship to Harvard University to study law.
Central to Castner’s success is the unwavering support of her mentor, Mona Hamby, who met her through a school mentoring program. Hamby watched Castner grow and thrived under her guidance, assisting her not just academically, but also nurturing her personal development, from helping her pick out glasses to her first salon haircut, and cultivating her confidence and self-worth along the way. Her powerful Harvard application essay began with the bold line: “I was born in prison,” a testament to her willingness to confront her past honestly and turn it into a source of strength. Aurora’s journey, from a jail cell at birth to the halls of Harvard, is a truly inspiring example of how determination, community support, and a strong spirit can defy all odds.
