Important reminder‼️

If you have pipes on an exterior wall, open the vanity doors (under the kitchen sink or vanities) so that heat can go in the cabinets. This helps prevent pipes from freezing when temperatures get into the single digits and below!

Severe winter weather is expected across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. We wanted to share a few quick reminders to help protect your residents, properties, and operations during the storm.

Please review the following preventative steps:

Walkway & Parking Area Treatment
Promptly plow, shovel, and treat sidewalks, entrances, stairs, and parking areas to reduce slip-and-fall risks.

Heat in All Units
Maintain adequate heat in all units — including vacant units — to help prevent frozen pipes and water damage.

Space Heater Safety
Remind residents not to overload outlets, extension cords, or power strips with space heaters, as this creates a serious fire hazard.

Protect Pipes
Inspect and insulate exposed piping in basements, crawlspaces, and utility areas.

Emergency Readiness
Ensure emergency maintenance contacts are available, and residents know how to report urgent issues such as leaks or heat outages.

Roof & Snow Load
Monitor roofs, especially flat or low-slope roofs, for excessive snow or ice accumulation.

Winter is coming… is your home ready? ❄️

A few checklist items can save you from a not-so-cozy insurance claim!
- Stop the freeze before it starts: Turn off outdoor spigots and drain any hoses.
- Keep the inside warm: Heading out of town? Don’t dial the heat down too far. And if pipes live under a sink on an outside wall, leave those cabinet doors open for airflow.
- Skip the slip: When there is snow and/or ice, shovel early! It’s also important to use ice melt to avoid any slipping.

A little prep now = a winter with fewer surprises.
