If you cancel your homeowner's policy and place your personal belongings in storage, what covers the storage unit?
Not the furniture in your house. The furniture in the unit down the road. Most homeowner's policies extend coverage to personal belongings you have off-premises - a storage unit, a college dorm, the back of your car. That extension is real coverage, and it disappears the day the policy does.
So if you are in between policies for any reason - switching carriers, closing on a house, whatever the gap is - that storage unit is sitting unprotected unless you do something about it.
Storage facilities usually offer their own coverage. It is not the same as what your homeowner's policy provides, but it is something, and something beats nothing when a pipe bursts in the building or somebody cuts a lock.
Before you cancel anything, look at what else you have in places that are not your house.
