WINTER WEATHER: Highway Conditions Alert 1-22-24 as of 5 a.m.
Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Oklahoma Turnpike Authority crews are reporting slick and hazardous roads throughout the state. Drivers are urged to stay off the roads if they can.
Crews are working to treat slick roads and isolated slick spots in Southwestern, Central, Northern, Northeastern, Eastern and Southeastern Oklahoma. This includes both the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas.
Drivers are urged to stay off the roads if they can. If drivers need to go out, they should be aware that if a highway looks clear or wet, due to the low temperatures, there is likely ice and should use extra caution, especially on bridges, overpasses and rural highways.
Drivers can check current road conditions on the interactive travel map at www.okroads.org or through the Drive Oklahoma mobile app.
REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:
β’ Stay about 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
β’ Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
β’ Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
β’ Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
